Thousands celebrate Hesperia's 20th birthday
Hesperia veterans, military personnel honored at ceremony
Thousands of Hesperians descended on the city's newest park Saturday to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the city's incorporation.
"Happy birthday, Hesperia! It's a great day," Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt told the assembled crowd. "I congratulate you on taking the government of Hesperia into your own hands. You did the right thing."
Residents queued up for food -- including competition barbecue -- games, music and to participate in a ceremony honoring the city's military personnel and veterans.
"We're here today to celebrate Hesperia's birthday, but also those who gave the ultimate sacrifice serving this country," said Councilwoman Rita Vogler. "Our heartfelt gratitude, our heartfelt pride, forever and ever."
"We are able to stand here today because of them," said Mayor Mike Leonard.
"Today's event was a dream of mine, and I'm excited to see such a great turnout," said Councilman Thurston "Smitty" Smith, before reading off more than 170 names of Hesperians who have served or are currently serving in the armed forces.
The city also presented plaques to the families of three Hesperians killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"When you see someone in uniform, please shake their hand and thank them for their service to our country," Leonard said.
The event took place at the city's new $4 million Hesperia Civic Park, located behind city hall and the library.
"This is a park that will cause us to come together as a community forever and ever," said Congressman Jerry Lewis. Lewis presented the city with an American flag that had been flown over the Capitol.
Although the ever-present High Desert wind made itself known, the day was sunny and bright, staying out of the triple-digit temperatures that had dogged the city just a week before.

| Lets show support for our military and get them out of Iraq instead of supporting President Bush and this unjust war.
City Council Approves Resolution in Support of President Bush
HESPERIA, CA – At the March 5, 2003 Hesperia City Council meeting, the Council unanimously approved a resolution pledging support to the President and Congress of the United States of America against terrorism. Brought to the Council by Council Member Jim Lindley, representatives will deliver a framed copy to the office of the President next week. “Given all of the protests against a possible war, I decided it was time we show some support for the President and Congress and their foreign policy,” said Lindley. |

| Great event. I was a little disappointed on the size of the childrens play area, do our kids not matter? I do want to comment on the military acknowledgement, the city could do more. They spend all that money on banners for new apartments being built, but nothing for our military heroes. If you go to Upland, they have banners on every light pole with the name of a person serving in the military. Couldn't our city do the same? Do we really need those nice big banners declaring that we are building more low income apartments? We all know what they are and what they lead to. They might as well stand our front and pass out cans of spray paint and weapons. I guess they should go ahead and build shopping cart parking spaces as well. |

| How nice that our city is honoring our military.
Now how about taking back the resolution the city council passed to support Pres. Bush's war on terror. The Bush Administration misled our country into war. How can our city continue to support this president? |
