Storm knocks out power to 1,784 Hesperia homes

As rain poured down and winds blasted through the Victor Valley Monday afternoon, nearly 1,800 Hesperians had no electricity and Southern California Edison crew members worked to restore power.

By noon Monday 1,784 customers had lost their electricity service in Hesperia amid 50 to 60 mph winds, according to Southern California Edison spokeswoman Lauren Bartlett.

Sunday’s rainfall marked the first in a string of storms expected to pound the Victor Valley through Thursday night, bringing wind gusts up to 60 mph and threatening flash floods and mudslides.

By week’s end, the Victor Valley is expected to get three to four inches of rain — up to two-thirds of the 6.3 inches of rain the area usually gets in a full year, according to meteorologist Dave Samuhel with AccuWeather.com.

Since Sunday’s rainfall, which brought less than a half-inch of rain to the High Desert, officials with local San Bernardino County Sheriff’s stations reported several fender benders with drivers losing control or hydroplaning on slick roads.
