Chamber awards late Gibeault with legacy award
Wife Janet Gibeault accepts on Ernie Gibeault's behalf
An emotional Janet Gibeault walked on stage to accept the 2011 Legacy Award on behalf of her late husband, Ernie Gibeault, as Hesperia Chamber of Commerce members cheered at the chamber’s Annual Awards Ceremony on Feb. 19.
The Gibeaults were praised for their many years of volunteering, including preparing the turkey dinner for several for years for the Annual Holiday Mixer.
“It was emotional accepting on behalf of my husband,” Gibeault said. “He and I were both ambassadors of the chamber. He wanted to volunteer for everything. He passed away last year, so it’s very dear to me to receive this award on behalf of him.”
The annual ceremony, held this year at the Courtyard by Marriott, recognizes some of the many volunteers, individual and business members who support the chamber and city.
In addition to chamber members who filled the room, several city and state officials were in attendance including Mayor Pro Tem Thurston “Smitty” Smith and Dawn Sikes, field representative for Assemblyman Tim Donnelly.
Matthew Hawkins received the Business Person of the Year Award. Hawkins, who owns Matthew Hawkins State Farm Agency, served as chamber board chairman for two years.
“I am honored,” Hawkins said. “I’ve been a member since 2005. I was really surprised and thrilled to receive the award. I love the people and the atmosphere.”
The Lillian King Award was presented to Mark Austin, the owner of C-Me Promotions & Embroidery. Austin is a member of the board of directors.
The award for Business of the Year went to Steeno Design Studio. Tom Steeno serves on the city’s planning commission, and Sophie Steeno is a member of the Hesperia Citizen’s Advisory Council.
“Well, as a company over 30 years in Hesperia, Tom has such a passion for this town,” Sophie Steeno said. “We like to be involved because our hearts are in this town.”
Advance Disposal Company & Recycling Center received the Gil Zank Award. The company was recognized for its long membership, since 1977, and for being a major supporter of the Hesperia community.
The President’s Award went to Shannon L. Shannon, in her third term on the board of directors.
“I need to honor this person because there is going the extra mile, and then there’s a little bit more,” Chamber President/CEO Yvonne Woytovich said before announcing Shannon as the recipient. “This person is running the extra marathon for the organization, giving a lot in terms of personal time in helping us with complex issues.”
