Hesperia High student struck, killed, by motorist

Girl, 15, killed while walking on Cottonwood Avenue Tuesday evening

STAFF WRITER

A Hesperia High School student was struck and killed by a pick-up truck Tuesday evening.

Shortly after 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 17, three teenagers were walking north along Cottonwood Avenue when they were struck from behind by a Toyota pick-up truck that had apparently drifted onto the shoulder of the road near the intersection of Cottonwood and Mauna Loa Street, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

San Bernardino County Fire Department personnel pronounced a 15-year-old female Hesperia High student dead at the scene. The other 15-year-old girl, who attends the Options for Youth charter school, was airlifted out to Arrowhead Regional Hospital, where she remains in intensive care, according to the Hesperia Unified School District. The third teen, a SUCCESS student at Hesperia High who was riding a bicycle at the time of the collision, suffered minor injuries and was driven to a local hospital for care.

The truck driver, an 18-year-old Adelanto woman, has not been charged with a crime as of Tuesday evening.

The sheriff's department's Major Accident Investigation Team is investigating the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call the Hesperia station at 760-947-1500.
