Repeat car thief leads deputies on high-speed pursuit

Special to the Hesperia Star

HESPERIA • A convicted car thief who was spotted driving a stolen vehicle was taken into custody after leading deputies on a pursuit that reached 120 mph early Thursday morning, officials from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Hesperia station said.

Hesperia deputies were alerted about a white Dodge work truck stolen from a residence in the 15000 block of Bear Valley Road when Deputy Antonio Higuera spotted a vehicle matching the description heading westbound on Bear Valley Road at Balsam Avenue around 4 a.m. Higuera tried to pull the driver over when the man — later identified as Cordero Chavez of Victorville — failed to yield and instead fled onto southbound Interstate 15, according to Susan Rose, spokesperson for the Hesperia station.

Higuera followed the vehicle as it exited the freeway heading westbound on Main Street. Chavez continued to evade the deputy with no regard for public safety, sheriff’s officials said, running red lights including the traffic signal at Highway 395 at up to 120 mph.

As more deputies from neighboring stations began assisting in the pursuit, Chavez continued ignoring sirens and traffic signals on Phelan Road, but eventually the stolen vehicle became stuck as Chavez turned south on Buttemere Road.

Chavez ran out of the vehicle and began to flee on foot only to be taken safely into custody after deputies set up a perimeter. Neither the deputies nor Chavez were injured.

Chavez, 25, was arrested and booked at Victor Valley Jail for felony evading and vehicle theft, and is being held under a no-bail probation violation. Chavez was convicted for vehicle theft and evading officers with wanton disregard for safety in an incident last May, but was on post release community supervision as part of Assembly Bill 109.

The stolen Dodge was returned to its owner.
