Letter carrier fired after mail dumped in the desert

All affected residents notified, says USPS spokesman

STAFF WRITER

A Hesperia post office letter carrier allegedly tossed mail into the Mojave Desert, rather than deliver it.

"Approximately 900 pieces of mail had been discovered," said Mike Cannone, spokesman for the United States Post Office's San Diego postal district. "They were still bundled up in the sequence they were going to be delivered in."

The bundles, post-marked between May 19 and 21, were discovered on September 1 by an Oak Hills resident living on Belmont Street. The mail was reportedly found behind a bush on undeveloped land.

The mail, all of it intended for Oak Hills residents, was still sealed up when discovered, according to Cannone.

"It doesn't appear that identity theft would be an issue at all."

The letter carrier who allegedly did not deliver the mail one day in May on post office Rural Route 5, Tammy Salter, no longer works for the post office. She now faces federal felony mail theft charges.

Salter was a relatively new hire, according to her former boss.

"I don't think she even had two years in service, to be honest," said Hesperia Postmaster Victor Maldonado.

The found mail is being held in evidence, but photocopies of the mail are available to the intended recipients, all of whom have been contacted by the Pasadena postal inspector's office, according to Cannone.

Such incidents are rare, he said, partially because the USPS carefully monitors employees for suspicious behavior.

"I hear about cases like this maybe a couple times a year, where carriers aren't delivering the mail they're supposed to be carrying," Cannone said. "In every post office, there's one-way mirrors, it's called an inspection gallery. You never know when someone's up there."

"It does happen, but not on a yearly basis," Maldonado said. "This is the first time it's happened since I've been here."

And the postal inspectors are helped by customers, who are not shy about letting them know when they think their mail has gone awry.

"And customers aren't bashful about calling us," Cannone said. "If they didn't receive something they were supposed to receive, they let us know."

Post office customers who were hit with late fees or finance charges as result of their mail ending up behind a bush in Oak Hills can get help from the United States Post Office: The USPS's consumer affairs department will write recipients a letter verifying the postal service's role in delaying the mail for those customers in May 2008. Call (858) 674-2670 for more information.

I don't think what happens to Tammy Salter is important, I think what is important is the unanswered question of how many times did she do this before she got caught? Mr. Cannone says that identity theft is not an issue, how does he know whether it's an issue? How many times have you gone to your mailbox and received offers for credit cards, etc. that you weren't expecting, Perspective, you really can't spectaculate that someone had months to notice that they were missing mail when there are often times you get mail with your personal information that you weren't expecting, that may not come regularly. This is deserving of far more media attention then it has gotten, I agree with the postmaster, an example needs to be made of Tammy Salter.

Perspective, if you don't know her, don't care to know her, then why do you care so much what people want to either do to her, or have done to her?

I have no clue who Salter is, don't know her nor do I care to know her. I would love to see a class action lawsuit and love to see every lawyer laugh you right out of his office. You would have to PROVE damages. Look at my comments again, never did I say it was ok nor did I make excuses for Salter. I'm saying that all of you want a 40 year federal prison sentence for throwing away mail and most likely none of you know what a drunjk driver who actually puts citizens in physical danger every time he drives. I am a Oak Hills resident and may just go down to Riverside to see the juge roll his eyes at you when none of you can even claim any actual damage.

I think the citizens of Oak Hills should band together on this one with a class action lawsuit against her just to screw with her the way she did with us, place liens on her property whatever is necessary she deserves every bit of misery she gets.

Who knows how long she will be in prison for, I personally hope it is a very long time, the only drawback is that as a taxpayer I'm going to be footing the bill for this piece of work. If she is released from prison after a short period of time, she is better off moving out of Oak Hills, she will forever be remembered and hated.

Do any of you actually read what is posted or think about what you are saying objectively. What is the invasion of privacy in throwing your mail behind a bush? And Geez, who wizzed in your coffee? Did it really sound like I said it was okay for your mail to be thrown behind a bush? So are either of you going to post an answer as to what important piece of mail you never recieved that the post office is holding as evidence now? I am also wondering, did any of you call the post office to report that you had not rec'd the letters? I am only pointing out that the carrier is going to go to jail because of her actions and in reality the damage to each individual is minimal. I'm not even saying she shouldn't go to jail, because I think she should. I'm just saying you sound like the crying fools and I doubt you have suffered ANY loss at all.

Newcomer, so you're saying its okay for Tammy to throw mail away because everyone else had three months to notice we didnt receive it? what kind of an idiot are you?

I cant speak for everyone else only myself Tammy Salter had no right to throw away mail that didn't belong to her its an invasion of privacy. People have every right in the world to be upset regardless of what kind of mail it was. I having been one of the persons that she did this to was told by the inspector generals office that they will be making an example of Tammy Salter. Tammy Salter is a POS and deserves whatever hard time she has coming.

This happened in May. Anyone who was missing a check or a bill or a subscription renewal for redneck weekly had three full months to notice what was missing before the letters where even found. Perspective is being very reasonable. This letter carrier is going to serve time for a felony because she was lazy. I don't know many jobs that result in felony charges for being lazy. I am VERY currious, would the persons who are SO angry about this care to tell us all what important piece of mail you never recieved?

How come Tammy Salter isn't saying anything to any of us? Why isn't she on here making a comment about what she did? I'll tell you why, because she isn't sorry in the least for what she's done, she couldn't care a less. Perspective, you're asking for people to "get over it" why should anyone have to "get over it" why should anyone really care what happens to her?

Another Affected Resident, I agree with you, I'd be interested in going too. Although for those of us who actually are affected residents we may have to be there anyway. I believe that was what I was told when I was notified that this happened in the first place by the inspector general of the post office.

This will definitely go before a judge in the Federal Court and will probably be heard in Riverside. As for me, who is one of the affected residents I plan on being there as an observer I don't know if the judge will offer anyone the opportunity to make an impact statement but I encourage all Oak Hills residents, if you feel you were affected by this, or you believe its just wrong, then show up too.

has anyone ever heard of the website rotten neighbor com. You can put in a persons address and make a comment about why they are a rotten neighbor or what they may have done. Since Tammy Salter is an oak hills resident maybe people should comment about her this is a small community after all.

My god, would you all look at perspectives responses? its nothing but excuses for her actions and defending what shes done. Definitely someone associated with Tammy Salter, perspective, you are a very sad person.

Isnt tammy salter that same fat whale that used to pull up at the mailboxes because she was too fat to get out of her mail truck? maybe they moved the mailboxes to far away and she had to walk to them so throwing the mail away was a better chooice.

There is a big difference between mail being held and mail being thrown behind a bush so she didn't have to go to the trouble of delivering it. Isn't that the entire purpose of her job in the first place, to deliver mail? What did she think they were paying her to do? You need to quit making excuses for her, unless of course, you're a friend of the lazy bitc-

Kathy, next time you get pulled over for speeding I fully expect that you will go to jail and serve five years. After all, punishments don't need to fit crimes.

Perspective - Nov 14, 2008 09:30:40 AM Remove Comment

Again, perspective is needed. IF someone was missing a check there is a process to get it replaced. Life is not over. The mail carrier will not get 20 to 40 years. And why should she? If you honestly believe that somoeone who throws away 2 days of mail deserves 20 years in federal prison than what do you think drunk drivers who actually physically hurt someone, people who assault someone? Manslaughter and the previously mentioned crimes often do not have a 20 year prison term. Looking at all the crime in the hi desert and putting this into perspective makes fools like yourself look stupid for wanting a 20 year prison term. My mail is held sometimes for an extra day either by the carrier or the office, should they get arrested for that?

Perspective - Nov 14, 2008 09:26:47 AM Remove Comment

To perspective and reality, you ask what more could I want? As long as I know she'll spend the next 20-40 years rotting in federal prison, that's good enough for me. As for the photocopy of the mail they didn't receive. I am one of the persons who has been affected by Tammy, aka, the Lazy Bitc-, and an entire copy of the piece of mail is not available, just the outside envelope. How does that affect the other people, who were maybe expecting a disability check, or a retired person, expecting their social security check and is on a fixed income? Who now has to go through the process of reporting that they didn't get it and wait for it to be reissued all over again, did the Lazy Bitc- think of any of this? Or was she just dumping her mail so she could rush home to watch Jerry Springer?
