Park district eyes equestrian center move

New Hesperia Lake Park facility would make way for significant Lime Street renovations

STAR EDITOR

Moving the Val Shearer Equestrian Center to Hesperia Lake Park would be a win-win for all who use Hesperia Recreation and Park District facilities, according to district administrator Cal Camara.

“The day is going to come when this [current equestrian facility] is going to have to be moved or the current one downsized,”Camara said Wednesday night at the district’s first of five park planning community meetings. “This is an opportunity in my opinion. We will get a better equestrian center and an opportunity build new facilities for kids at Lime Street. I’m kind of excited about it.”

The opportunity has one catch, however: The district must win a state park grant of up to $5 million. The non-matching grants, which are part of a State Assembly bill, will be awarded to the districts with the most effective pitches.

Under the plan, the district would build a new equestrian facility for approximately $100,000 in a currently vacant portion of Hesperia Lake Park. By vacating Lime Street Park, the district could spend the remaining millions on renovations and new facilities at the district’s key location and other district improvements.

“I think that’s a good exchange,” Camara said.

Wednesday’s meeting attracted about 50 people, several who shared their visions for new facilities.

“We have an overwhelming cry out for some place for the kids to skate,” said Cory Bosacki, 30, one of several attendees in favor of a district skate facility. “The location of a skate park doesn’t matter. We’d like to have it at Lime Street. I think it would be a benefit for the community.”

Resident Sally Austin said she would like to see an outdoor theater like one in Redlands and an archery range. Camara said that the district was planning a building in conjunction with the Hesperia Civic Park stage and will likely have an archery range in the near future.

Gwen Gregg talked about the district’s Little League facilities.

Paul Peté, unit program coordinator for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Victor Valley, suggested a gymnasium for basketball at Lime Street Park.

“Quite frankly I’d like to see a gym at this spot,” Camara said in response.

Other suggestions included new aquatic facilities and a teen center

“A lot of the suggestions people made were good ones,” Camara said. “They were very helpful. If they don’t let us know what they’re thinking they have no opportunity to have their ideas bloom.”

Remaining park planning community meetings:

• Friday, Nov. 6 at 10 a.m.

• Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 2 p.m.

• Saturday, Nov. 14 at 10 a.m.

• Tuesday, Nov. 17.at 6:30 p.m.

I wish my friends and I had a place to ride our BMX Freestyle bikes. By the comments below, sounds like others do as well.

Gwen Gregg is a greedy you know what. The sign on Maple that reads home of the future Maple Park claims that there will be yet another baseball field with lights. She has the nerve to ask Parks and Rec for even more baseball fields?

We get chased by the police and told to leave the area when ever we ride our bicycles around main street. Please build us a skatepark we can ride our bikes and skateboards in. If hesperia had this, it would be great.

We've been asking Cal for a skatepark for years. he don't listen do what the people really want. If a park like this ever does get built, the bicycle youth need to be allowed.

I went to the meeting on November 10th. My son and I were the only ones there. Our group has a BMX Freestyle foundation that will help with building a Bike / Skateboard park. We ask Cal Camara for a park for these kids. We will be at the next meetings. Please spread the word for support. Saturday, Nov. 14 at 10 am Tuesday, Nov. 17at 630 pm.

How many bicycle youth and Skateboarders have we lost in our local streets. I think its about 2 per month. Yeh, lets build these kids a place to ride away from the 4,000lb SUVs. No grass to water, just a drinking fountain.

I think most of you ought to attend one of the community meetings to make your voices heard, rather than hoping someone else does. Besides, after attending one of the meetings so far, many of your concerns have been addressed and are already being planned. I think a soccer facility is being planned for the new Maple Park. And a skate plaza is already being talked about.

Skatepark for sure. also allow the bikes. That skatepark in apple valley is a joke. Looks like Grand-pa built it. We need a park for our skateboard/bike sports.

There are bike kids and skaters kids on every block up here. They would be at the Skatepark everyday, year round. We need to step up for these kids and build them a park.

Please, there are 200 plus kids who practice three days a week and play on Saturdays between Trojans and Wildcats. Last I read, there were over 500 kids playing soccer in Hesperia. You really going to tell me that there are that many kids who will show up every weekend at a skate park? Nope! I'm not against a park for that, I just think the Parks and Rec needs to look at who will use a facility the most. I believe its Soccer and football along with Sport Parent. Trojans already pay to rent practice space and would pay to rent game space. Skate kids going to rent a facility?

I agree with Crazy Lacy and No More Little League. We really need some of these parks in the high Desert. Apple Valley is working on building a bike park and they already have a skatepark. Our hesperia kids will go there and take our local tax money away from our local fast food joints. Cal, you said you were working on this for the HESPERIA YOUTH. WHAT HAPPEN.

How about a Bike / Skateboard Park with lights so the youth don't have to rely on the store parking lots? There are more kids riding bikes and skateboards than soccer, football.

Gwen Greg can shut it. How many of the park facilities are already dedicated to baseball and softball? Hesperia Nationals registration has been on the decline for years and they want more facilities? Goes to show you how that organization is being run.

How about a football/soccer field with lights so the programs don't have to rely on the high schools? There are more kids playing football and soccer than skating and biking.
