Prom season is already fraught with reasons to be nervous. A group of Hesperia High Schools students are hoping to take at least one source of stress away.

“A lot of girls don’t have money for this one special night,” senior Liliana Guadarrama said. “It would be nice for them to not have to worry about the dress or having their hair done.”

As president of the school’s Peer Club, Guadarrama is working with the school’s counseling office to support a prom dress drive for the Spring Valley Lake charity Rena’s Dresses. Rena’s Dresses will operate a boutique before prom season begins, and participating girls will have a personal stylist assigned to them who will help them pick out a dress, shoes and accessories and can arrange for free hair, makeup and nails on the day of their school’s prom.

“Right now, the economy’s bad,” said counselor Tammy Aguilera, who’s working with the Peer Club on gathering dresses and helping put girls who need help in touch with Rena’s Dresses. “Kids are more hesitant to ask for help.”

This is actually the Peer Club’s second dress drive. They organized one in October, but the day after they hung up posters advertising it around school, Hesperia was drenched in rain, destroying their advertising. Despite that, they still collected 175 dresses.

This time, Guadarrama said the group is doing everything it can to get the word out.

“A lot of people have been in weddings,” Guadarrama said. “Any dress can be made pretty.”

“You won’t believe how many staff members came to us with dresses in October,” Aguilera said.
