SPURRING AN AWARD: BNSF in April opened a new BNSF spur line along G Avenue in Hesperia's industrial area. The spur helped earn the city a national award from the American Public Works Association.

City receives national award for rail lead track

G Avenue project delivers spur access to 200 acres

The city won a national award for its industrial rail lead track along G Avenue, with the venture recognized as facilities project of the year by the American Public Works Association.

“We are proud of our Industrial Rail Lead Track and are honored that the APWA recognizes the value of this project,” Mayor Bill Holland said in a prepared statement. “This is the only available rail-served industrial area in the Victor Valley, which will help revitalize the industrial area and bring much need jobs to Hesperia.”

The rail site, located in the city’s Enterprise Zone, is one of the few viable locations in Southern California able to provide rail. It will allow local industry to more easily access the BNSF rail line, letting future tenants load and unload their own cargo instead of moving goods by truck to an existing train depot.

Beginning at the Cushenbury Branch Line, the new lead track is nearly one mile in length. It will accommodate spurs to most properties between

E Avenue and the former G Avenue. In all, there is the potential for spurs to be delivered to 200 acres and to help generate 400 jobs in coming years.

The project was nearly 10 years in the making, from conceptual design to grant application and award, through to final design, construction and project completion.

The city received a $2 million federal grant from the Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration in 2008 for the construction of the lead track, parallel runaround, drainage channel and service road. The city’s grant match for the project was $5.6 million, which was fully funded by bond proceeds from Hesperia’s former Redevelopment Agency.

On Dec. 12, the APWA’s Southern California chapter recognized the Hesperia project among other capital improvement projects with a BEST Award. For more information about APWA, visit www.southernca.apwa.net.
