Recall effort goes down to the wire
With deadline looming, proponents short of required signatures
With only days left until the attempted recall of three Hesperia Unified School District school board members comes to an end, proponents have not gathered all the signatures necessary.
To put school board members Hardy Black, Robert Kirk and Lee Rogers up for recall in a special election later this year, recall proponents need to gather 6,919 signatures on petitions for each of the three. That's more than the votes cast in 2006 for Rogers, just 45 fewer than were cast for Black and 85 percent of the votes cast for Kirk.
As of midday Thursday, recall spokeswoman Lori Nielson said proponents might not get the required signatures by Monday's 5 p.m. deadline. The group had previously set April 1 as a self-imposed deadline to have all their signatures -- along with a buffer, in case some petition signatories are not registered voters or do not live within the boundaries of the HUSD -- but looks to be up to a thousand signatures short.
"We had hoped we'd have it ready to turn in [Friday], so we're going to give a serious push on this weekend and we'll see how it goes," she said. "If we're still short a lot, there's no way we're going to do it."
The recall proponents' grievances are spelled out on the petitions that have been circulated since January, and include the allegation that the three targeted board members forced out former HUSD Superintendent Hank Richardson -- officially, he tendered his resignation -- "spent thousands on unnecessary attorney fees regarding the construction of Oak Hills High School"; acted as the "pawn" of Hesperia Teachers Association teachers union; micromanaged staff, "leading to [the] loss of dedicated administrators"; eliminated "effective sixth grade schools, in spite of proven instructional benefits"; and ignored "demand for parent input on calendar change until after public outcry."
Black, Kirk and Rogers have called the accusations misstatements of fact and are the product of former school board members seeking to regain their position. Nielson was a school board member from 1991 to 2003. Fellow recall proponent Nellie Gogley was a school board member from 1991 to 1995 and 1997 to 2006.
Kirk and Rogers declined comment until after Monday's deadline. Black could not be reached for comment.
"If we aren't successful, I'm going to focus on the positive, and all the awareness we've brought to the issues," Nielson said.
The Hesperia Star's April 8 issue will go to press before the deadline for the recall supporters to turn in their collected signatures. Check HesperiaStar.com on Tuesday for the latest news regarding the recall attempt.

I appreciate Beau's efforts here, but I do not believe that the ROV will, or even should, validate the number of signatures collected. They are in go or no go mode with the recall and the bottom line here is no go. That said, credibility counts and Lori has made some numerical assertions here that cannot be proven true, but the laws of common sense do prove her claims to be false. She falsely claims 15,435 signatures which means that they collected 129 signatures every single day for 120 days. 120 days times 24 hours in a day equals 2880 hours they had available to them. Lori now claims that they collected 5 signatures every single hour, for 120 days straight, for her numbers to be valid. Did not happen.

I posted last night from my home computer, and didn't have my notes with me. In fact -- according to figures from Lori Nielson, and no, not independently confirmed -- they were more than 1,700 short on signatures on each of the petitions. I have called the registrar of voters regarding the possibility of them looking at the petitions anyway and should receive an official answer from them later this afternoon, and will update the recall story with whatever they say at that time.

Here's an idea. Why doesn't Lori turn the petitions in and let the registrar count the signatures. Yes, I know she failed to get the number of signatures and it's too late to qualify for the ballot but this way we would all know for certain how many signatures were on those petitions. We'll NEVER know the truth otherwise.

Anybody want to bet on Beau's take on this recall effort? I am betting that once again he will be biased in his so called reporting of this issue. He will promote Lori's claims that she was only 1000 names short, oh yeah he already has done that on this blog. I'm betting he will not ask for accountability with this issue. With all the turmoil that has been caused by this recall effort and then Lori doesn't even bother to turn them in. That's an insult to the people who worked to get signatures or for those who believed the lies and actually signed the petitions.

I heard from a source very involved with the recallers that they had less than 1500 signatures for each board member. But we'll never know will we since they failed to turn them in. However, it really doesn't matter because the bottom line is that this recall effort is over! Hooray!

There is no way that anywhere near 18,000 valid signatures were obtained by prorecallers from registered HUSD voters.

Don't take their bait, Beau. You are excessively balenced, and usually are conservative on your reports, and most know it. You often don't say enough. Just reporting the behavior of those in charge at the board meetings or quoting their public statements alone would be incendiary. Those who are whacking you with their political agenda are not the majority.

I did say Tuesday, if you re-read. I was at the school board meeting tonight and have not yet had a chance to speak to all the principal figures involved, and I think it would certainly be more fair to Black, Kirk and Rogers to give them their chance to respond. In any case, yes, the recall folks did not submit the signatures, having come up more than 1,000 names short on each. There will be a story posted Tuesday morning, and probably an update on Wednesday.

| Hey Beau,
where is your breaking headlines about the recall petition drive failing? I thought you said to check this website for news about the status of the recall. I think you should demand to know how many signatures were actually on those petitions. The public has a right to know just how many supported Lori Nielson and her foolish effort to hurt our district. Where is your fair and balanced reporting Beau? Yeah, I get it. |

You know the changes made by the board are for the better when so many entrenched veterans of teaching begin to cry about them. The 3 board members probably came in with a plan that they felt would better our district but are being forced to address 2 major issues, the recall attempt and the budget. Kindergarten and music are not required by the state and could be cut all together leaving parents to hire a baby sitter for thier 5 year old and find a rec and park program for music eduation. People all need to remember that it could always be worse and never will everyone be happy with ANY changes made by the board.

Easy for Bentley to not worry, he's been on a permanent vaca thanks to the wife for quite some time. Gives him time to kinda philosophise and Monday Morning quarterback from the front porch rocking chair. Surprised he's a fan of the current board when his kids are elementary and they are the ones bearing the brunt of the cuts already mentioned and probably for the further cuts to be announced on Monday. Still the Honeymoon, I guess.

The pros and cons for the recall are all part of our human history and growth as a nation. At least thats the way I was taught by teachers many years ago. I'm sure some teachers are for the recall and some against, which is as it should be. The same can be said of the hesperia general population. Attending board meetings of the husd board can be very interesting and enlightening. It seems in these response columns the comments are more of a personal nature by the Chris B. and others. Verifiable facts would help not just individual interpretation of carefully chosen information biased towards one's perspective. Sign or don't sign, Boards come and go and changes are inevitable. The HUSD will prevail as it has since the first little school was built a long time ago.

FYI to Chris B. and others, it's not all about the vacation. Many of us teachers take professional growth and continuing education classes during the summer. In other jobs, employees sign up for their vacation time. All our teachers and some parents too, want is start, end and holiday dates so we can make necessary plans for ourselves and our children. I'm glad this will be on the agenda Monday. The Cypress changes were not supposed to happen for another year. This was already voted on. The elementary cuts have to do with class size in kindergarten and our music program and teachers.

HUSD veteran, do you know the definition of pathetic because you sure are. I will bet you on the calendar issue. BTW you and your buddies seem to lose alot of bets these days especially with the recall nonsense. And the three have consistently said that Cypress would become a k - 6 choice school so what's the deal with your comment? And could it be that there are MORE elementary teachers in the district than secondary ones so that is why more elementary positions were on the proposed list?

The calendar for next year is on Monday night's agenda. And it is the rarest of industries and employers that give their employees this much notice reagarding vacation. And you also have nine weeks off coming up very soon too. Quit yer squawkin seems an appropriate comment.

For the first time in years we do not have a calendar for the next school year. Many teachers are waiting to finalize vacation plans based on our calendar. Anybody want to place bets that the board will give us the Apple Valley calendar once the recall date passes? Remember, they said they wouldn't do it, but they said the same thing about Cypress. Makes you wonder. Oh, it's also interesting that in the article about budget cuts, most of the cuts effect elementary schools. Could that be because three out of five board members are former secondary teachers?

I hope the public and Beau take note of the tone for the pro recallers. They lost a general election and the public has said no to a recall and do they do the honorable thing? Nope. They continue down the path of selfish ambitions by saying slanderous and baseless claims against the three board members. They want to spread fear and intimidation with their statements. So much for what's best for kids. Let's bring down the whole district because once again they didn't get their way. How about working with the board for a change?

Good grief Hesperian. You are either a liar or stupid! These petitions have been available for 119 days, advertised through the mail, advertised through the newspaper, advertised through the classified newsletter, and reported extensively by the Star and you want the public to believe that you haven't had an opportunity to sign yet? What does that say about you?

Whoa! This whole group cries for free speech but it looks like once again someone has decided that Chris isn't entitled to speak freely. This group only wants free speech for those who speak what they want spoken.

It's this comment like teachers " It was unlikely we could get enough people to care about the kids " that has turned me off to this whole campaign to recall. " Who is being deceptive here? The suggestion that only recall advocates care about our kids is pure disingenous rhetoric in my opinion.
