Getting to know 1st District candidates Lovingood, Roelle

Robert Lovingood and Rick Roelle will square off in November to represent San Bernardino County’s 1st District, which includes the Victor Valley and the majority of its surrounding unincorporated areas.

To help readers get to know the candidates, the Daily Press asked both men to answer several questions related to their backgrounds and personal lives. Here are their responses, in roughly 50 words or less.

Tell us about your education and work experience.

Lovingood: After high school, I spent four years in the United States Air Force and attended the University of Maryland through overseas extension courses and then continued at the University of Georgia, focusing on business and economics. I came to the High Desert in 1989 and opened up my first staffing employment agency.

Roelle: I served a 30-year career in San Bernardino County Sheriff Department. Assignments include jails, patrol, narcotics and Internal Affairs Division. I received the prestigious Commander’s Award for an undercover sting operation that brought violent criminals to justice. Currently I am a lieutenant managing jail operations.

I am an eight-year council member for the Town Council of Apple Valley and SANBAG. My studies are in criminal justice.

Tell us about your family life.

Lovingood: I live in Apple Valley and have been married to my wife, Melanie, for 15 years. We have three children, a son and two twin daughters.

Roelle: I have two adult sons, Ryan and Derek. My son Derek is attending Humbolt State University majoring in Engineering. Ryan blessed me with my first grandchild, Austin. I spend my spare time with my grandson doing and visiting things Austin is interested in like parks, pools, cars and trucks.

Tell us what you do in your free time.

Lovingood: My free time is mainly devoted to family and community events. We enjoy the outdoors and have traveled throughout California and the surrounding states, camping, hiking and enjoying the outdoors. Our children are very active in sports and we attend all of their games.

Roelle: I enjoy boating, motorcycles, camping and classic cars. The High Desert has much natural beauty and offers many outdoor activities that I enjoy.
