Schnebeck named new Hesperia High principal

Former vice-principal of student activities has been at the school since 1990

Staff Writer

Hesperia High School has a new principal and it's a familiar face: Vice-Principal of Student Activities Bob Schnebeck has been tapped for the job.

Schnebeck got the news late on June 9, after the Hesperia Unified School District school board came out of closed session. He replaces former principal Larry Porras, who has been named the principal of the Hesperia Unified School District's next comprehensive high school, Oak Hills High School, which will open in August 2009.

"I got a lot of inside encouragement," Schnebeck said. "Everybody knew Larry was going and people wanted someone from inside."

And he's been inside: Schnebeck has been at Hesperia High since 1990, and worked with Porras for 15 years.

"I've been on the [student activities] side for a long time and now I'm ready for a new adventure."

He'll get it: Schnebeck is taking over the top spot at a school that is expected to have 3,700 students during the 2008-2009 school year and approximately 150 teachers. Those numbers will drop once Oak Hills opens and school boundaries are redrawn, but during his first year in the top spot, Schnebeck will essentially be the chief administrator for a small town.

"We've got a great staff," he said. "It's a nice place and I'd like that to stay the same."

Of course, Schnebeck has been in education since he started off as a remedial math and science teacher in 1977, and he's got some ideas of things he'd like to try, now that he's in charge.

"I've worked with 11 different principals and I think I've learned something from every one," he said. "Larry's been a real people person, and that was a great lesson."

Although Schnebeck said he intends to keep all of Porras' successful initiatives, he also intends a few new ones of his own: "I'd like to focus on teachers, especially new teachers."

Once upon a time, new teachers worked as student teachers while acquiring their accreditation and had classroom experience before giving a class of their own. Today, some teachers come to work with little or no classroom experience and little mentoring. Porras organized roundtables for new teachers to discuss their challenges, and Schnebeck said he hopes to up the frequency of the group sessions.

Ultimately, everything done at Hesperia High needs to benefit students, he said.

"You're supporting education, and that's pretty simple to me."

Schnebeck said he liked working under Porras and hopes to build something comparable.

"I mostly wanted to be on a good team," he said. "Now I have a chance to be the in-charge guy and try and make that same kind of team."

He'll get his chance in a big way after the 2008-2009 school year, when Oak Hills High School staffs up and is likely to lure away some Hesperia High staff and teachers. Schnebeck said he and Porras have discussed how a similar transition worked when Sultana High School happened in the 1990s and said they intend to work together to make the process as painless and as positive as possible, for both those who leave for Oak Hills and those that remain at the newer, smaller Hesperia High.

"Schools are more than buildings, they're the people," he said. "Buildings are nice, but it's mostly going to be about the people."

"Bob is part of the culture at Hesperia High School, he really is," said Superintendent Mark McKinney. "He's been an innovator in a number of programs, and he really is part of the lifeblood of Hesperia High School. He's been in a leadership role the entire time he's been there, and now he's taking the leadership position."

School board president Robert Kirk worked with Schnebeck back when Kirk was a science teacher at Hesperia High School.

"He has just a wealth of experience. He's been innovative, in my mind, with some of the things he's done, like the 4.0 dinners" and the much-imitated Mr. Scorpion pageant, Kirk said. "I worked there with him, worked well with him, and have a lot of respect for him. ... I think he's going to do a great job there."

"I've got a lot to learn," Schnebeck said, "But that's part of the thrill."

"He's a Scorpion down to his socks," McKinney said. "I think it'll be a great transition."

Um,there were like 18 or so people on the interview panel. Dr Kirk was only ONE vote. How dare people discredit the panel with their choice. The made the BEST choice. From what I know of the other candidate mentioned, well, she not too good with people. I'm sure if she had been hired, she would have looked at the little petition that went around the school to support her and find out those who didn't sign it and well, never mind. Bob got the job. Great choice!

The principal selection process story idea is a good one. I'm putting it on my list.

Quick to judge will hinder later. That should be the theme with this site/paper and its posters. Did anyone check to see how principals are hired? Maybe someone should do that before saying one person or another did this with no other input. How about the paper running a story on the process of how principals are chosen? Mr. Yarborough or Mr. Day could do this I bet. I am ashamed if these posters are from Hesperia and writing posts to cause panic or distrust. Shame on you. By the way, my grandson likes Mr. Schnebeck and says that he has been in education much longer than the gal you mentioned.

I'm well aware of who was /invilved/ in these various ventures. You support Kirk apparently despite his obvious dirty deals. I know a man's heart by his works, and he's only proven how poor a choice he is for HUSD.

I am amazed. Hesperian are you not aware of who was the leader of Excell? Are you not aware of the person who owns the construction company invilved in the bidding process? Are you unaware of all the jobs created by the district for their friends? Or are you one of those that has lost their cash cow?

We here at the school love BOB and are happy with the choice the board made He will make a graet leader and we hope MRS ESTRADA will stay on staff and not leave like a little hot head like she is

I don't think we should debate who the better candidate is as none of us can be equally aware of all the factors involved. Each candidate has strengths and weaknesses, Mrs. Estrada and Mr. Schnebeck included. We should leave the skeptism and criticism behind and look to the future with intrique as change lies ahead - whether that is good or bad remains to be seen.

Another Hesperian is correct, Michelle is an Assistant Principal, and Bob was a Vice-Principal. Michelle has more experience in curriculum and instruction, as well more experience completing "thorough" evaluations.

I would've chosen the more experience, more qualified, and higher in the HHS chain of command Michelle Estrada. Not the Mr. Schnebeck isn't a good guy, but fair is fair.

I fear that despite Mr. Schenebeck successes and good reputation he will get the proverbial black mark due to the praise heaped on him by Kirk and Bentley. If you two support him, than stay quiet, as your approbation is probably detrimental as most people who know Kirk and Bentley do not, with good reason, trust them or their opinions.

Buckley - Jun 23, 2008 10:04:04 AM Remove Comment

Really Bentley? Mr Porras wouldn't say anything bad about him to you even if Porras felt he was not a good choice. Mr Pooras has more professionalism and is smarter than that. I think what Hesperian was trying to imply was that Kirk kept it in the family, as in people he has worked with and trusts.

How do you make the leap from "knows him" to nepotism? The interwoven nature of HUSD familial relationships has been going on for decades, as it does with all school districts. But, to my knowledge, Dr. Kirk and Mr. Schnebeck are not related, which is the nepotism qualifier. I have met and spoken with Mr. Schnebeck and he seems like a quiet and intelligent person of good character. I wish him well. I was introduced to him by Mr. Porras who had nothing but good things to say and good wishes for his future at HHS. But who would you have selected for the post?

Chris B. - Jun 21, 2008 10:10:52 PM Remove Comment

The operative sentence here is the Kirk used to work with him. Is there to be no end to Hesperia nepotism?
