HUSD board to discuss the status of Richardson

School superintendent has been out on leave since July

Staff Writer

The Hesperia Unified School District will be holding a special meeting Tuesday evening with one item on the agenda: Superintendent Hank Richardson.

The meeting, announced Thursday morning, consists only of a closed-door session, covering "contract negotiations regarding [the] superintendent's contract." Evaluations of Richardson's performance have been a staple of closed-door board meetings for several months now.

Richardson has been on paid administrative leave since July 16, despite the 2007-2008 school year beginning in mere weeks, a time when school administrators are typically at their busiest. District personnel policy prohibits discussing the reasons an employee has been placed on administrative leave.

Rumors have circulated for several weeks that Richardson is close to being fired or resigning, less than a year after taking over the position at the start of the 2006-2007 school year.

The meeting caps off a school year filled with administration employee departures, which former Kingston Elementary School Principal David Long laid squarely at the feet of the three newly elected school board members at the July 23 school board meeting and in letters to the editor submitted to the Hesperia Star and Daily Press.

"Hesperia is one of several union run, dare I say, bought and paid for school districts in the state of California," Long's letter reads, in part. "Every member of the board was a teacher or is married to a teacher and while the interests of teachers should be represented on a school board, no school board should represent the exclusive interests of any group. No matter how hard they try, I don't believe the current board members can represent the community's interests in our schools. ... I also believe they are putting this school district in jeopardy economically, academically, and in leadership, in terms of who is attracted to the district or who stays as administrators."

Getting rid of certain HUSD administrators was explicitly one of the goals of the Hesperia Teachers Association, the local teachers union.

"Winning three more school board members is a huge victory, not only for the teachers, but also for the students and the community," HTA president Jim Pace wrote in the January 2007 HTA newsletter. "Five years ago, district leadership issued pink slips to every teacher. ... Instead of thinking about what was best for the students, teachers and school sites, their priorities were what was best for them. Thanks to you, those days are over! Most of the district's leadership that caused these problems are now gone and the school board members that went along with these plans have now been voted out of office."

Richardson has a three-year contract, which runs through 2009. If the board wants him out in the interim, they have the option of moving him to another position within the district, although he will retain his benefits and salary until his contract ends. The former eighth-grade teacher could end up being the best-paid driver's education instructor in the district, even as the board hires a new superintendent to replace him.

The special meeting of the HUSD school board meeting will be held Tuesday, August 7 at 5:30 p.m. in Sultan Hall at Sultana High School. It will be followed at approximately 5:50 by a meeting of the Hesperia Institute for ExCEL.

If Robert Kirk, Lee Rogers and Hardy Black had something on Hank Richardson they could of removed him on a 3 to 2 vote. Jim Pace has said that he wanted to fire Hank Richardson, Richard Bray, Bill Freeman and Bob Stranger many times. Once Jim Pace had the votes on the board he could then get him out of there. There is nothing wrong with what the old board did to give the superintendent a safety net to make sure the new board gave him some kind of a chance. And this garbage of not building new schools, show me a school that the new board is working on that was not part of the old boards plan or already in process? And be real, to put Hank Richardson on administrative leave, the new board would have to instruct Mark McKinney to do so. Again if Hand Richardson had done something wrong Robert Kirk, Hardy Black and Lee Rogers votes could of removed him.

so Gordon the old board knew they were going to lose. so they inserted this language into Hanks contract. Sure they did. Hank was not dumb, he knew how Mr. Bray's contract was stuctured. The old board knew their days were numbered because they refused to build schools. Like I said I had nothing against Hank, You can call them rumors all you want , but Mark Mckinney put him on leave for some reason now didnt he? If Hank was around and in charge why would Mr Mckinney have to put him on leave?

Grant the peoblem is that it was Mr. Mckinney that put Mr Richardson on administrative leave. Somrthing to do with not coming to work or returning phone calls. But now no one can say what really happened. Remember it was the old board that gave Mr. Richardson his contract with language making it next to impossible to fire him.

Board meeting minutes and voting records are facts. I don't like their voting records and I don't support them. I for one want the recall and am not going off gossip.

Mike, you live in Apple Valley. This School District belongs to our community, not yours. If you do not like what we want in our schools, you can go work for Apple Valley School District. I know that you would get paid less in Apple Valley. Maybe that is the reason you teach in Hesperia.

Tony McGuyer-- You are wrong about Hank. He was more than qualified. Your credentials only mean you completed a program. A MS in Mgt. Wow. Congrats. Are you using it? No? Why not? Perhaps leadership is more than barking and a slip of paper. Good leaders a followed for their character. I am surprised you did not learn that in the military.

I am ashamed to be a teacher when I hear the disrespect that some teachers here have shown to the parents of our district and to those that have served our district. In addition, I don't always agree with all decisions that administration makes. But bye bye, you should be ashamed of yourself.

The truth. It is all about you isn't it. You are a high paid teacher. Congratulations. Please stand in awe of the high paid teacher. Better yet please stand at the all district in-service and shout to all of us that do not support the decisions of the school board, Jim Pace, or Mike whatever that we are all the bad teachers. How naive. You teach children? Your comment about this coming from non-elected board members. Again how naive.

In less than a year's time HTA leadership and three school board members have derailed our district off the course to greatness and placed it on the path to failure. The teachers as a whole in the HUSD are among the very finest. I am saddened to know that I work with some of the teachers that would not only support this madness but would kick a man when he is down. As to Hank's salary get up go to school get an administrative credential serve the district with more than complaints and perhaps you too might EARN that wage. It is one of two things a choice to not work to EARN that type of position or the lack of skills to do so. Either way you sound like a fool when you complain about it. Spend your energy teaching kids to better themselves rather than teaching them to complain about what you do not have to get what they desire. Better yet, attempt to be humane and EARN the respect of your your students, their parents and your peers. You have nothing but my pity. You may employed as a teacher but you are not one. I am ashamed to be a part of a district that you call yours. Hank Thank you for all that you have given to this district. You are a great leader and more importantly a man of courage and integrity. I also thank those that have left. Thank you for your service. You will be missed. To the students of Hesperia and their parents please accept my apology for those that are ruining this district and do not see the future impact this will have on you and your children. Know that not all teachers are like those that have so badly misrepresented our district. Those that disgruntled and cruel. Their shame will be exposed. Please continue to have faith in our district. The great people of this city will not stand idle for long. We will get this cleaned up and thank you in advance for your patience.

All we need are 7,000 do-gooders to sign the recall petition. Then another 1,000 do-gooders to vote in new HTA leadership next spring. I have always supported the union in the past, but they have gone way too far!

To Bye Bye, you hit it right on the head. The do-gooders WOULD support Hank. That would make the board supporters what, I suppose?

I love how these teachers and other district employees love to speak for the parents who do not work for the district. I am one of those parents so I do not attend staff meetings and union meetings etc. My information comes from the media and from attending public meetings. It is funny that you all keep saying that we wanted these board members and that is why we voted for them. I can honestly tell you that my vote was because I thought the teachers supported these candidates. I was horrified to find out that the UNION used the members dues to pay thousands of dollars to support these members when it was not what the majority of the teachers wanted. How can a union put there name on something when the majority of their members do not agree? Why do they not talk to the union members before making a decision on important issues? Oh wait! This is exactly what the current school board is doing. Making decisions without speaking to the people they supposedly represent. Did they ever really ask administration members about Hank? Did they really ever ask teachers and parents about the 6th grade schools? The only issue they ever asked about was the school calender change and we all know that it was a waste of time and money because they knew the answer before hand. On behalf of myself and other nonemployee parents please stop speaking for me and for us. The wool was pulled over our eyes in the last election. Trust me if I knew the truth about the Union then I would have never given my votes to the new board members.

I must apoligize for my typos. I was writing in the heat of the moment and in a hurry - not good for rhetorical effect. Grant, you tell the parents of this district that I am only concerned about money. Where did I say this? Again, that statement is a glaring example of your prejudice, ignorance or just a pathological compulsion to trash anyone who does not agree with you. Do you ever consider that I and all the other teachers who are sick and disgusted with the gutter politics that are dominating the debate in this district just might be dedicated teachers also? A rational argument for your views would be refreshing. Try it sometime. "Difference of Opinion" While your name seems odd to me it isn't as odd as your comments. That you have the nerve to cite Lee Samuels who fought for the rights of students and employees in this district is dispicable. As for your contention that all the union/Pace supporters are "mediocre" teachers hiding behind the union is pure slander. You should be ashamed. I am one of those teachers and I have worked hard in this district for twelve years. No one has ever insulted me like you and your group have and you don't even have the guts to sign your name. Come back when you have the wits to make a case based on anything that resembles fact.

Have you noticed how a similar thread runs through the haters? All about what someone else has or is making. Of course they don't want to better themselves to get a higher paying job. Nah. Just sit around and complain about others. Sad

See ya Hank. Go back to your mansion down the hill and suck up all the money you can for doing nothing. That puts you on par with what the prior board did with Bill Freeman. It's time we get a superintendant that actually LIVES in the community instead of down the hill. Can we put it in the next guys or gals contract that they must live here to get the job? I can't wait to hear all the do-gooders crying for old Hank at the All-District Inservice on Friday. It should be touching. Nothing worse than a bunch of riled up hens trying to suck up to someone who isn't even in charge anymore.

Since we are mentioning movie quotes, from Cool Hand Luke this explains the entire crisis in this district. From the movie, "what we have here Luke is a failure to communicate."

We will wake up tomorrow with a worse district than we had today. Mr. Egan, you and your union's only problem with Mr. Minton and Mrs. H. Rogers are that they didn't stay bought. They are reasonable, rational people and I guess that just won't fly on the HUSD School Board these days. To paraphrase Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men, all you've done today is weaken a school district. How proud you must be.

Irregardless of what you think, the individuals that support the recall are hard working, tax paying, parents and citizens of Hesperia, not simply a few disgrunteld teachers as many of you have stated. And, the pay the teachers get is from our tax dollars as is everybody else on the board and who works for HUSD, you are all seeming to forget who pays your checks. It is not a few teachers. Give the parents more credit than that, jeez.
