Board approves performing arts high school
Encore charter school set to open August 2008
It's official: Hesperia's next high school will be a performing arts charter high school.
With a unanimous 5-0 vote, the Hesperia Unified School District school board voted Monday night to approve Encore High School's application for a charter to operate in the HUSD.
There was no sea of red clothes this time, as there was at the last school board meeting, when the Encore proposal was presented to the board. Instead, only the founders of the new school attended and were available to answer questions.
There was only one: Where would the school be located when it opened in August 2008?
"That seems like a really short time," board member Helen Rogers said.
Encore administrators were looking at several locations within the HUSD's geographical limits, Encore head Denise Griffin said, but until the board gave their official approval, securing a lease would be difficult.
With the approval given, Griffin said after the meeting, they expected to have a location lined up soon.
Founders expect Encore High School to serve 600 students from grades seven through 12 in its first year, with a 25:1 initial student-to-teacher ratio and focus on the performing and visual arts.
The next HUSD school board meeting will be held November 5 at 6 p.m. in the Administration & Educational Support Center building at 15576 Main Street.

| To all of the parents and teachers in the planning of Encore good luck and thank you for opening this school. For the HHS that was complaining that your school has a great Black and Gold band/orchestra and drama dept. that is all very true and you should be proud. But my child plays the cello and violin, these instruments are not played in a band they are played in a "Symphony" and no schools I believe in the high desert has a symphony. Stay Proud of your school and wish the jr. high students enjoyed the arts as well. |

| HHS will be fine, the Drama dept. at HHS is strong and all ways will be. Encore will allow the jr. high students across the high desert to get the art and performance classes that are not offered st their schools. |

| Yay! I'm so happy it was approved. It will be THE BEST high school in the entire high desert and might even be a prestigious school one day. Encore won't be a rival to Hesperia OR Sultana because it will be a charter school and Encore will be too good to have any rivals. So yeah. It won't be overcrowded like I KNOW Sultana is. Encore will be a great opportunity for everyone because of all the wonderful teachers it will have and the lack of overcrowding. Hesperia School Board is really smart. |

| So The Board made a really bad decision with this approval. Encore High School is just dragging kids away from Hesperia High Schools Drama Dept. Did You Know Hesperias Drama Dept. is Number 1 in So. Cal? And They breathe off of the new talent that comes into the school year after year! If This new school is to drag HHS Drama Dept apart HHS will never be the same. What this is also causing now is for even more rivalry in the High Desert. Dont get me wrong, Sultana vs. Hesperia High is Classic. But what will it be now Hesperia High v. Sultana v. Encore?
Just an Opinion. |
