Oak Hills High School construction on track
HUSD official: ''It's starting to look like a little city''
Construction on the Hesperia Unified School District's next high school is on track and classrooms are beginning to sprout up on the 80-acre campus.
"The contract is to have the school done by August of '09. I don't know if you've driven out there lately, but the contractor is moving right along," George Landon, Assistant Superintendent of Business Services for the Hesperia Unified School District, said Thursday. "A lot of the masonry buildings are being constructed and even some of the modular classrooms are going in. It's starting to look like a little city out there."
Recent bad weather has slowed construction somewhat, he said, but Riverside-based ASR Constructors remain on track.
"They're moving right along," he said. "They've really accomplished a whole lot."
The district is building a number of schools, with more on the drawing board. The HUSD's third middle school, which opened at the beginning of this school year, should be finished by year's end.
"Cedar Middle School will be wrapping that up by the end of the year," Landon said.
But first, the district will be opening its next elementary school. Mission Crest Elementary School is scheduled to open its doors on March 24.

| I don't believe the funding for the new Oak Hills High School comes from the general fund which is where the cuts are being made. Besides, the necessary decision to build this high school was made long before Arnold decided to balance his budget by taking away from our kids. |

| If you read the Daily Press today, all 3 local HD districts are talking about teacher layoffs being possible at the schools we already have. And yet we're building schools all over the place when enrollments are down everywhere up here. I don't understand what the high-paid suits that work in the district offices get paid for. These people are paid to make good decesions for the taxpayers and all they seem to do is the wrong thing. They talk of laying off teachers who directly impact students EVERY DAY, and then save their own jobs with their own bloated salaries so they can come in to the office for a few hours every day and then leave early in the afternoon to go play golf after spending 2 hours at lunch on the district tab. Cutting should come from these worthless do-nothings who each make as much as 3 teachers combined. Site adminstrators are overworked and do their jobs and usally well, but the central administration needs to be pared down significantly to account for the necessary cuts because they do little to impact students on a daily basis, which is the schools' main objective. Not pad their cushy retirements at the age of 55. |
