Rich, Riley, Swanson endorsed by HUSD unions

Teachers, classified employee unions make their school board candidate picks

Staff Writer

It's two months before Election Day, but the two unions who represent most of the employees of the Hesperia Unified School District have already made their choices.

The Hesperia Teachers Association has endorsed school board candidate Anthony Riley and the California School Employees Association has endorsed Frank Rich and Eric Swanson.

The two groups represent all the HUSD employees other than management.

HTA endorsement

Both unions have political action committees that will raise funds and contribute to the campaign efforts of their chosen candidates. It's a model that's worked out well for the HTA in the past: All five of the school board members on the 2006-2008 school board were endorsed by the teachers union during the election.

"Well, of course we hope for that" every year," said Thomas J. Kerman, the chairman of the HTA's Political Action Committee. "We're assuming that the candidates who came to us and asked for our endorsement knew what it means."

Although the HTA PAC financially supports their choices, their support goes beyond that.

"What we have been able to do in the past is mobilize members and go and do all the things required in an election. It's really not all about money."

Although the HTA rep council interviewed four potential candidates, they ended up endorsing only one person in an election where two seats are wide open. The HTA went with Anthony Riley, a newcomer to Hesperia school politics.

"He had experience working within a government organization," Kerman said. "He is, I believe it is, the executive director of the San Bernardino County airport. He's also worked in private industry [and] was involved in a charter school for performing arts, in the development and operation of it."

Riley is also ready to hit the ground running, Kerman said.

"He already has a campaign set to go and to run, so we felt comfortable with that. He's 36 years old and he's single, so he's got some youthful energy and new ideas."

And despite his single status, Riley also understands the needs of parents, he said.

"He had taken on the responsibility of raising a foster child all on his own," Kerman said. "So to us, that was a real strong character issue."

CSEA endorsements

For the first time, the local chapter of the union representing non-teaching, non-managerial staff is endorsing candidates in the school board election.

"Honestly, we're concerned about the direction of the school district," said Ruth Ter Keurst, president of CSEA chapter #684. "It came to the point where you have to decide if you're going to sit back and complain or try and make a difference. We would like to be part of the solution, not part of the problem."

Ter Keurst said the union is hoping voters will elect their choices, and that Rich and Swanson will be board members that they can work with.

"[Incumbents] Bruce [Minton] and Helen [Rogers], we didn't always agree on everything with them, and we don't always expect to agree on everything with these two candidates," she said. "One thing that we wanted was someone who would look at all sides and take in the point of view of all stakeholders, not just one side."

Neither Minton or Helen Rogers will not be running for reelection.

CSEA representatives met with potential candidates in June and July.

Candidate Frank Rich is himself a CSEA member.

"We knew him," Ter Keurst said. "In fact there were two other previous employees who were considering running."

But 29-year-old Rich had an edge on the others.

"Quite frankly, because he's younger, and we need to look toward the future of the Hesperia Unified School District," Ter Keurst said. "We need to have some people who care more about what younger families do. ... We'd like someone in there who doesn't have any political ties or any political agenda."

Former board member Eric Swanson is even more of a known quantity for CSEA, and voters. Ter Keurst said that known quantity -- including being mentioned in a state audit of the failed California Charter Academy and subsequently appearing before a grand jury investigating potential criminal wrongdoing related to its collapse -- has been something the membership has paid close attention to.

"We did look at both sides. I was concerned because he was a former board member and because of some other issues, there was some baggage there," she said, "But after meeting with him several times and asking him some tough questions, we were happy with the answers."

Beyond his experience on the board, Swanson has a stake in how things go in the HUSD, she said.

"His kids do go here, his wife teaches here, and he thinks he can make a difference."

While the HTA has the winning track record, the CSEA has an advantage that their counterpart does not have: Most teachers do not live within the borders of the HUSD, and thus cannot vote in the November election for HUSD school board members, but the reverse is true for CSEA membership.

Listen tot he tone of those, or the one, that support the CSEA picks for endorsement. They are clear inthier intent to have a CSEA union voice on the board, to the exclusion of independant voices which representt he community. If you want a minimum of 2 more years of in fighting and attacks on character go ahead and vote for the CSEA endorsed candidates, if you want a chance to move forward, look for an independant voice. Remember, the school board represents the voice and needs of the community, not the individual unions.

Neither did HTA. And they say they represent us? Give me a break!

I just finished watching the video from the last board meeting. I can't believe McKinney, Kirk, Lee, and Black could not spend five minutes to recognize Bruce Minton for his years of service to HUSD. Where did Kirk learn the word "fairy-talish"? Was this one of his spelling words when he was getting his Phd?

Black, Kirk, and Lee Rogers did represent change. Change everything that they personally don't like, even if it's good for kids and parents and working. That's not working out. I like Swanson because of what he actually did for the school district, and how he treats other people, with dignity. Why would I vote for someone who doesn't know enough to challenge the lousy changes this board espouses? I don't vote for unknown quantities, I vote for leadership and experience, both of which Swanson has in abundance.

I understand your viewpoint. I agree that people should not blindly follow the opinions of others. The parents of HUSD should vote the independent route. All of the endorsed candidates have baggage that prevent impartial decision making. I will not vote for any of these three. I am looking for a candidate who will bring change to the district. Change is the montra for 2008 and beyond. These three offer more of the same.

As a member of CSEA I can assure you that we aren't looking for candidates who will blindly vote in a way that benefits CSEA. We're just looking for candidates that WON'T blindly vote with Kirk. We believe that Swanson and Rich will vote with their brains and hearts, and we trust them. It's really that simple.

There is one important fact that many people appear to be unaware of. Both unions started their interview process several months before any candidate was allowed to officially pull papers, and neither union chose to interview the complete list of candidates who filed papers by the deadline before announcing their selections. In fact, they made their selections before the filing deadline. It does not appear that this race is based on democratic principles where the electorate reviews the positions and background of all candidates. Instead it is a tug of war between two unions who both want to stack the board for future benefit. My vote will go to an independent without hidden agendas and motivations, as should your vote.

First of all, I believe that candidates have to actively go to a union to ask their support. I'm not completely sure of that but I seem to remember hearing that somewhere. That being said, did HTA interview Rich and Swanson? Don't be hypocritical here. I don't see why not supporting the obvious Kirk puppet Riley is a bad thing in your opinion. So what if CSEA has a voice on the board? Have you not been paying attention? Kirk has three votes. Oh, sure, technically it's Black and Rogers, but have they EVER voted differently from Kirk? Might be worth looking into. It seems like you think that it's perfectly okay for HTA to have control over the board, but CSEA can't combat that? I guess it's pretty obvious which union you belong to.

Fed up in hesperia, you say the CSEA had no obligation to interview or get to know the other candidates and thats ok? Do they know what Henson and Lindsay think? What attributes they bring to the table and how they might be of value to HUSD? I understand not interviewing Bently, but it appears they have gone out and found two individuals who will be thier puppets and that was thier intent all along. If that was not thier intent why did they not interview more candidates? If they did, how many or who did they interview. The perception is that Swanson was picked because he is certainly not in the HTA pocket and Rich because he had minimal HTA interaction and belongs to the CSEA union. Why is it okay for the CSEA to do what people are accusing the HTA of doing? Lindsay and Henson are outsiders who appear to be qualified and have a business centric point of view that would help balance the heavly educator based board, whay are they not endorsed by CSEA?

CSEA will be hosting a Candidates Forum this month and will be inviting all candidates to participate. Date and time to be announced shortly. CSEA was under no obligation to interview all the candidates before endorsing which is not to say that we didn't consider others. But let's face, who'd want to endorse Bentley, except for Jim Pace? Funny how the teachers revolted when they received a fax stating HTA's endorsement of Bentley. WOW! Words flew and Bentley was quickly cast aside.

If CSEA is only interested in getting independant thinkers on the board, without a hidden agenda of putting puppets on the board, why didn't they interview any other candidates?

The reason Kirk wants to be superintendent is because he would not only be running the district, but he would be making an extra hundred fifty thousand plus per year doing it. The last blogger is right, Mckinney doesn't go to the bathroom without consulting Kirk, but watch how fast they flush McKinney if Riley gets elected.

Kirk doesn't need to be superintendent. He already is. He just has a puppet to make it look like someone else is doing things. Does anyone really think that McKinney even goes to the bathroom without consulting Kirk first?

Superintendent - Sep 03, 2008 04:57:10 PM Remove Comment

Rich and Swanson will NOT be CSEA puppets. CSEA wants board members who will look at the issue, consider the results and make a decision based on what is best for Hesperia's Children. While is it clear that Kirk and his cronies have pressure from HTA, there have been many occasions when Helen and Bruce agreed with them. This is all CSEA is asking for. Use your best judgment, speak up for what's right and be responsible for your actions. Support Rich and Swanson. Their what's best for Hesperia.

VOR, you assume too much about Swanson and Rich. If Eric proved anything during his time on the board is that he's an independent thinker and views each issue on its own merits. I don't believe he or Rich would just automatically vote against Kirk for the sake of it, if it was something that was good for the district. Can you say the same for Black and Rogers, in regard to voting AGAINST Kirk? Look at the voting record over the last 2 years . . . have EITHER Black or Rogers voted differently than Kirk? Makes you, uh, think, doesn't it?

Hopefully VOR will be able to attend at least one of the candidate forums so that he can make an informed decision. Voting for a person who is not likely to win will only split the vote and keep out someone who has the best interests of our children in mind. Which I'm sure is exactly what the Kirkettes are hoping for. I will be supporting CSEA and their endorsements. Please be sure to let us know where we can get our lawn signs.

As a teacher, I have both classified and certificated friends. It doesn't matter which union they belong to, they all think this board majority is ruining the district. CSEA has the integrity to stand up to the board, too bad HTA doesn't have that same integrity. I support the CSEA candidates. I trust CSEA. I can't say the same thing for HTA.

Why are we to trust that 2 CSEA backed indivicuals are the best choice just because they are backed by a clearly anti current board group? Swanson has a track record and history that can be dragged out for good or bad, he is clearly adversarial with the remianing board members and guarantees that the constant bickering and non-productive sessions will continue. Rich has nothing but a non-offensive bio, no board experience, no demonstrated leadership and certainly can not be viewed as an independant voice on the board, he will clearly be a swanson yes man. I'm voting for the only businessman in the bunch, Lindsay. At least he has business experience and board experience, and he is not beholden to any group.

It is funny how people turn on those they once loved. Kirk and black were teachers in HUSD for along time and appeared to be supported by the majority of teachers during thier run for office, they begin making changes in the district and get the stamp of the devil. Now it is happening with Mckinney, he is doing his job well and happens to be paid less than all his local counter parts, yet he is accused of selling his soul to the kirk devil. Remember Swanson was a teacher pick who fell out of favor, yet now he is back as the solution.
