Carmel Elementary hands out 'Cougy' awards

While not exactly the Oscars, Carmel Elementary School's third annual "Cougy Awards" had many similarities to the movie industry's Academy Awards -- prestigious and a golden statue.

"We stepped up the level of elegance," said school principal Chris Mauger.

Held on May 17 in the school's multi-purpose room, nominees were dressed in style. Winners made acceptance speeches.

Special guests included Assistant Superintendent Mark McKinney, School Police Chief Bob Mosley and administrators from other school sites.

A special lifetime achievement award was presented to Carmel parent Kim Porter whose children Kenny and Kassidy both have attended Carmel Elementary from kindergarten through sixth grade. She has served as the school's PTA president, School Site Council Chairperson and school volunteer for the past eight years.

"We will miss her terribly," Mauger said. "She's done literally hundreds of things here."

For Porter, getting involved was a no-brainer.

"It's important to be involved in your children's education," she said after the event. "And I just love being around children."

With both children attending Ranchero Middle School next year, Porter will continue to help out. But she knows there aren't as many volunteer opportunities as children get older.

"I'll help out with ticket and yearbook sales."

Outback Steakhouse of Victorville catered this year's Cougy Awards event. They donated dinner service and gift certificates.

"Manager Chris Espinoza and the Outback staff went above and beyond to add a classy touch to the evening," Mauger said. "And they have always enthusiastically supported Carmel Elementary School in various ways."
