Mission Crest teachers brave the clippers

Mission Crest Elementary students were challenged to read for one million minutes in the month of March. If they accomplished that goal they would receive two special rewards.

"I agreed to sit on the roof, and the male teachers agreed to get short haircuts," said Principal Michelle Murphy.

The result?

"They went above and beyond," Murphy said. "They read approximately 1,200,000 minutes."

And so, on the morning of Monday, April 28, the principal went ontop of the new campus's rooftop.

"Our roof is painted white, so it was like being snow blind up there. But I had a great time and threw paper airplanes, played ball and blew bubbles at the kids."

Meanwhile, inside the school's multi-purpose room, four male teachers went underwent the able clippers of hairstylists from Generations The Salon. Stylists Lisa Harris, Tracy Ferguson and Marie Hedges cut the hair of teachers Allen Neuenschwander, Derek Castillo, Jimmy Elgan and Nathan Timm.

Crediting Craig Gunter, a principal at Eucalyptus Elementary, Murphy said, "I really wanted to encourage reading for fun, not just because one has to read."
