Vogler: Voters 'have had enough' of Postmus-connected politicians

Staff Writer

After six years on the Hesperia City Council, Rita Vogler is looking down the Cajon Pass for a new position.

"I'm very happy being on the council, but I do think I can take what I've learned ... down to the district level," she said.

Vogler is one of two Hesperians running for the 1st District Supervisor's seat in the June 3 election. There's just one problem for her: The seat is currently occupied by the well-heeled Brad Mitzelfelt, who was appointed to the position after the previously elected supervisor, Bill Postmus, won the 2006 election for county assessor. Mitzelfelt had been Postmus' chief of staff.

"It was a continuation of the same regime," Vogler said. This election, the first in which Mitzelfelt can be challenged, "is the perfect opportunity to move forward."

"If people look at the city council as a whole, the city's accomplishments," she said, "It's virtually impossible for anyone to say we haven't listened to them in terms of roads, infrastructure, public safety and the open form of government that we've set up."

And she says the lessons she's learned in Hesperia are applicable across the 1st District.

"Every community has the same issue, and that's public safety," she said. "Cities are limited, we know that. This is not just a 1st District issue, it's a county issue."

To give law enforcement and other agencies the funds they need to effectively fight crime, Vogler said, is going to require cutting costs elsewhere.

"We're going to have to cut back on our resources," she said. "There's gong to have to be some serious investigation of the programs the county already has. I want to see a rate of return."

She also wants to change how other things work in the nation's largest county by geography.

"Campaign finance reform has to happen. Nobody wants to talk about it," Vogler said. "Put limitations on [campaign funding], a cap."

As of May 17, Mitzelfelt has spent $480,252.

Vogler said that she's established a $50,000 ceiling for her own campaign.

"We might be a tad over that, because we've just done one final mailer."

Even if Vogler doesn't win on June 3, it isn't necessarily over her: To win the 1st District supervisor's seat outright, a candidate has to collect 50 percent of all votes cast, plus one. Failure to do so will force a run-off in November between the top two vote-getters.

"I really do believe I'm going to do quite well," Vogler said. "I really do."

I sincerely hope that people like Old Resident and Sunshine, aka Al, learn from a situation like this that just because some of us may be new to the area or were not directly involved with political propaganda, we're still able to discern fact from fiction. Your passion, although admirable, was conterproductive to the Vogler campaign. In the future, when someone asks you to provide tangible evidence of a candidates qualifications, skip the emotion and stick to the facts. You did a major disservice in this case. I wish you luck in the campaign for the assesors office. Based upon the results of the last election, and the pro-Vogler postings here, you'll need it.

Congratulations Old Resident, your eloquence helped elect the new 1st district supervisor. I guess 80 percent of the voters are conspiracy theorists. Thanks for swaying my vote. I'm sure the Vogler campaign appreciates your contribution.

I heard that if you go to the daily press site and take their poll but delete the cookies after you have taken it that you can take it over and over again. Doesn't sound like a fair poll to me.

No one wants to admit all of the good things that happened while Vogler was the Mayor. She has done alot for the city and will be a great asset to the county. Rita Vogler for Supervisor

Vogler has mentioned a platform based upon 8 items, but never talks about them and her solutions. All I see from her and her supporters are complains and presumptions about Mitzelfelt. Looks like he has done more for hesperia in 18 months than Vogler has done in 30 years. I'll vote for Mitzelfelt

Why fix what isn't wrong? Do you feel safer in Hesperia than 8 years ago? Crime has shot through the roof. Why, because Postmus and gang have decided to sell out the high desert to every cheapo developer who knocks on their door. Crime is through the roof up here. No one is saying no development, let's just have some common sense development. And you will not get that from a candidate who take over $1 million from developers, 99 percent of his total contributions. Also, Mitlezfelt has been with Postmus from the beginning. Why reward these crooks? And NewResident, you make my point with the $1 million dollar bail being so high in the California Charter Academy theft. The judge decides the amount based on the severity of the crime and amount of evidence. Pretty high if you ask me. Or is the judge part of your crazy conspiracy too. One more thing, the only people who have disputed the audit are those who stole the taxpayer money. duh

Don't like being yelled at in print. Vogler can be a perfectly nice person, but doesn't mean she knows how to get things done. Mitzelfelt brings progress and knows how the system works. Why fix what isn't wrong?

My vote next Tuesday will be for RITA VOGLER.

Michael - May 30, 2008 04:29:09 PM Remove Comment

My reason to vote for RITA VOGLER is simple. She has been in the community for over 30 years has been a business owner for over 20 years She has been on the council for six years and has been Mayor. She also has been in many elected positions in which people voted for her to be there. She has been Kiwanis President Chamber President and has been active in many other non profit organizations. She knows what the residents needs are and know what the perspective is for small business owners being a small business owner herself. She has worked hard for the positions in which she has held and they have not been handed to her like others. I will not vote for Brad who is connected with Postmus and others and amazing that his postion was handed to him by the Postmus Nowicki group. I and many others on June 3rd will be voting for the person that is the most honest and hard working someone that you know will be there for the residents at the end of the election. RITA VOGLER FOR SUPERVISOR JUNE 3RD

Reason to vote for Brad over any other candidate, he's been acting as supervisor for 18 months AND has actually made choices that are improving public saftey and the viability of our high desert community. Examlpe, both supresive and prentative measures against gangs, child molesters and illegal dumpers. The commision of a trauma center viability study. Brad's qualifications include more than just experience as the supervisor, he has also been part of the sb county fair board, true he was not elected to either position rather he was appointed to both. But is being an ELECTED official a qualification in and of itself? I think not. My recomendation is to vote for Brad, if for no other reason, he's doing a great job already. Rita's platform is not objectionable nor are they items that Brad will not address.

Old Resident, thank you for making my choice that much clearer. The Postmus gang laundered millions of taxpayers dollars you say? Your rhetoric has nearly single handedly made up my mind. A DA with political aspirations and the grand jury convened at his bequest, presented only with evidence for the prosecution is the best you have to offer? What proof do you have that the firm hired and directed by the department of education has NEVER had its findings questioned? They're questioned in this case. As to the 1 million dollar bail, armed robbers, rapists, even child molestors don't receive bail that high. What's the motivation here? Kudos on your ability to parrot the rhetoric of the Mitzelfelt detractors. Base upon the current polls, I won't be alone should I decide to vote for Mitzelfelt. Now, is there anyone who can offer any intelligent and responsible information regarding the candidates? I anxiously await those responses.

New Resident, the Postmus gang laundered taxpayer money through the private corporation, much like how the mob used to operate. On one side you have a DA, judge, Grand Jury indictments, $1 million dollar bail, and a mountain of a paper trail detailing the fraud from an independent auditing firm composed of former law enforcement officials which have never been accused of fabricating information in an audit during their 30 years of existence. On the other hand you have the Postmus gang saying the it was OK to pay their personal income tax with our taxpayer money and yourself. Maybe you should vote for Mitzelfelt.

It seems that some are inferring that Vogler is against developing Hesperia because she doesn't take money from developers. If I'm right, you may want to check the archives for a story called "Vogler, Hesperia will attract higher-end businesses". She may not take money from developers, but she wants to develop Hesperia. Furthermore, does everyone know that there are at least FOUR people, not two, running for the office?

Old Resident, you make a compelling superficial argument but you did not answer any specific question. I cannot dispute your claim that they have approved the rezoning of land without having all the facts, however, your statement that the Mitzelfelt/Postmus gang stole millions of dollars from taxpayers is emotional not fact. I knew very little about the whole California Charter Academy connection before reading the posts here, but from what I have since researched regarding the issue, the evidence in this case is hardly conclusive and highly suspect. Based upon the audit offered by the department of education and the archive articles on the topic of California Charter Academy, it is clear that the gang received funds from a for-profit corporation that legally received payment for their management services. How is that stealing? I can understand how the politically motivated or avid National Enquirer reader could spin it to make it appear as if there were wrong doing, but please. Does anyone else have anything specific and based upon substaintiated, credible evidence to sway an undecided voter one way or the other?

New Resident - May 29, 2008 07:24:46 PM Remove Comment

New Resident, I can tell you specifically what I am tired about with the Mitzelfelt and the Postmus gang. In the past few years Hesperia and the rest of the High Desert has turned into a gang land. Postmus and gang have been in charge for more than 8 years, Mitzelfelt as Postmus' Chief of Staff and right hand man. During this time they have taken millions of dollars from developers, rezoned land left and right, and approved every cracker box house you see, all for their developer contributors. At the same time they have lined their pockets by stealing taxpayer money via the California Charter Academy and given jobs to all of their friends. Mitzelfelt has been in the corruption from the beginning. At least Vogler is a small business owner whose contributors are not big developers based down the hill looking to make a quick buck on our backs.

Based upon the postings by Ms. Vogler supporters thus far, I am leaning towards voting for Mr. Mitzelfelt. Seems like alot of unsubstantiated finger pointing and emotion from the Vogler camp. As an undecided voter I have to say that the individuals posting here are not doing Ms. Vogler any favors.

New Resident - May 28, 2008 06:46:15 PM Remove Comment

Reg Hesperia Resident If you would read past reports you would find out that the County Registrars office spelled her last name wrong and that is why you cannot find out the information and that is why residents were not able to find her information How convenient for the person that misspelled her name. How convenient that Daily Press didn't do a story. Secondly LBO she is not connected with Honeycutt and you need to get your facts straight. She has to sit with him at the council meetings but that does not mean that she makes deals or has outside meetings with him. IF you look at the past of Mitzelfelt you would find out that he does all of these things with Postmus, Nowicki gang. Thirdly Hesperia Resident why do you need someone that has to raise over a million dollars to run a campaign? I think its wonderful that Rita Vogler is showing that you can run a campaign without having to raise such a large amount of money. Finally, GOD BLESS RITA VOGLER AND I WILL BE VOTING FOR HER ON THE THIRD OF JUNE.

MACKENZIE - May 28, 2008 09:34:41 AM Remove Comment

I find Ms. Vogler personally frosty and ill informed. She doesn't seem to know what a Supervisor does, and she wants me to vote for her? Since I observed her rudeness to one of the city's most dedicated volunteers, I've dug a little more and don't like what naivete and Nanny state business I've found. Don't need an Al state, either.
