Leonard, Bosacki, Bentley, Riley win seats
Riley comes from behind to bump Lindsay out of seat
All Hesperia votes have been counted: Mayor Mike Leonard and Planning Commissioner Paul Bosacki have been elected to the Hesperia City Council, and candidates Chris Bentley and Anthony Riley have been elected to the Hesperia Unified School District school board.
The San Bernardino County Registrar of Voters published the results at 12:38 p.m. Wednesday, with votes from all Hesperia precincts now counted, including absentee and early voting results.
City council race
A retired firefighter, Leonard has won a second four-year term in office. Councilman Tad Honeycutt, whose seat was also available in this election, chose not to run, and he's been replaced by letter carrier Bosacki, who first ran for city council in 2006 and was named a planning commissioner the following year. The two received 26.30 and 23.67 percent of the vote, respectively, or a total of 7,379 and 6,641 votes each.
Their rivals, Mark Kirk and Russ Blewett, ended up in a second tier, almost 2,000 votes behind Bosacki. Kirk and Blewett each received 16 percent of the vote (16.95 and 16.68 percent, to be exact), or 4,755 and 4,678 votes. Kirk spent more than $131,269 in the election (final figures won't be available until the end of January), more than 12 times what Leonard and Bosacki spent, combined.
Candidates Rochelle Garner, Scott Bennett and Dennis Arquette did not spend much (or anything) on advertising, did not pay for ballot statements and perhaps as a result, are clustered at the bottom of the vote count, receiving between 6 and 5.15 percent of the vote each, with Garner doing the best with her 1,684 votes.
School board race
In the HUSD school board race, a stay at home father of four elementary school children is the top vote getter in the race. Bentley received 7,283 votes, or 24.87 percent of the vote.
Over the course of the vote counting, Anthony Riley -- the best-funded candidate in the school board race -- lagged behind candidate Chris Lindsay, but Wednesday morning, the San Bernardino County economic development director for airports closed the gap, passing Lindsay just before crossing the finish line. Riley received 20.82 percent of the vote with a total of 6,098 votes. Lindsay received a total of 20.04 percent of the vote and only 229 votes fewer than Riley.
Eric Swanson, the only veteran school board member in the race -- although he was voted off in 2006 -- trailed Lindsay with 15.04 percent of the vote, or 4,405 votes.
Frank Rich received 3,490 votes, or 11.92 percent of the total.
Riley had been endorsed and financially supported by the Hesperia Teachers Association, the union representing the HUSD's teachers. The HTA outspent the California School Employees Association, the union that represents non-management, non-teacher HUSD employees. The CSEA endorsed and supported Swanson and Rich.
Bringing up the rear was independent candidate Bruce Henson, who received 2,141 votes or 7.31 percent of the total.
Water board race
One incumbent held onto his seat and one lost his in the two Hesperia-area Mojave Water Agency board of directors races.
Incumbent Richard Hall, the Division 3 director on the MWA board, held onto his seat with 7,142 votes, or 49.76 percent of the vote, easily holding off a challenge from Brian Pierce, who received 4,822 votes or 33.60 percent of the vote and Nancy Siegrist, who received 2,389 votes or 16.64 percent of the vote.
Incumbent Dick Fortyune, the Division 7 director, did not fare so well. He lost his seat to challenger Doug Shumway, who won 72.30 percent of the vote, or a total of 8,098 votes. Fortyune, in turn, collected only 3,103 votes, or 27.70 percent of the total.
No more updates -- probably
The next set of election results is due to be released Monday, November 10 at 5 p.m. by the registrar of voters. If something occurs to change the results -- unlikely now, with 100 percent of precincts counted -- there will be a new story to reflect that.

Not a ChrisB Fan, your claim that Bray put up road blocks is a matter of opinion. I had an issue with the district, tried to get it resolved with factual proof that I was right. In the end, it was Bray, Googley, and Swanson that met with me. Bray was behind the hirring of a new teacher, getting the "storage" room cleaned out, and gettingmy kid the heck out of the overflow school. I found Bray not that hard to work with.

ETSNELL, I recommend cameras from Radio Shack for a little more cost. The cameras from Harbor Freight are junk and do not have an auto iris to adjust to the bright sun. Believe me, I have both.

| Congratulations to Paul Bosaki
I am expecting to see big things from Paul Good luck
As to the school district race I have always been at odds with educators and there corruption and union ties I am hoping that at least one of them has the brains to get the school police trained in CIT crisis intervention traing It deals with handling kids with special needs and most kids in trouble when examined closely have mental disabilities so it makes it not only humane but sensable to train the school police in recognizing these kids and getting them a complete treatment regieme Diet therapy and medication if necessary
I am also hpoing that one of are elected school officials has the brains to use security cameras on in and near all schools you can go to harbor freight and the cameras are only 39 00 and costco has tape decks for 500 00 that will record up to two weeks. Also remember that LA and San Bernardino counties have the highest rate pr capa of any other counties in California in having the highest ratio of pedophiles as residents

To Responsible Voter, Funny was meant as sarcasm. The reality is that it is so sad that more people did not do their homework, did not care, or waited until the last minute to make their decision. I happen to have voted in every election since I was eligible and very much respect those who fought and died for our country. As a documented Son of the American Revolution, I am especially concerned about those who do not take this privilege seriously. In this 21st century, there is little reason for candidates not to post their positions on the web. Only a couple HUSD candidates actually posted anything of worth on their websites. Those were the candidates I voted for. The others were just blowing smoke.

Evey board member should go though a through back ground check, Life Scan, Finger Printing. and job qualifications. And didn't Bentley say he would not take a dime for his job on the board but do it for free? He said it lets see if he can stick to it. he has no reason for the money,or is he going to be a kirk puppet too. the lay offs are going to far now and forcing to ones who have given a great service to the district the brown boot not the golden handshake, most are to young to retire. What a shady deal to save a buck in my book.

The problem I have with ChrisB and his platform that the parents and community need to be able to question the board is that he has argued that they are currently unable to have that access. The board meetings ALWAYS have a time alotted to hear from the public and the board members are present in the community to hear the concerns of the community. When ChrisB stands up and tells the board he has a problem with a tax payer funded school district opperating a photoshop at a loss, the board is listening. When a citizen stands up to tell the board they don't want to see the photoshop shut down for one reason or another, the board is listening. When the board makes the choice to close the photoshop, they do it with more evidence and thought than the public comment period provides. The problem with ChrisB is that he is unwilling to be on the loosing side and will fight rather than listen or compromise. I also don't think that he connected enough to the community to understand what the community wants or needs. ChrisB ran for the board telling us that he intends to allow the parents to be heard but his decisions will be based on what he wants for HIS children not OUR children.

ChrisB is right, VOTERS have the right to be served by the board and the VOTERS have the right to be heard when they feel change is needed. When these VOTERS are also PARENTS who have children in the school district they are expected to take compliants, problems and suggestions to the teachers, principals or the superintendant. If the parents fail to find resolution they can then go to the board. The previous administration, back as far as Brey, put up blocks to prevent access to the board. This did two things, the board believed the parents were happy and the parents felt betrayed. I believe this accurately describes ChrisB and his desire to provide the parents with better access to the board.

Comic Relief, I couldn't agree more. Even people in my own family were asking who so and so was up to voting day. But I disagree with you about it being funny. We have an obligation to honor those who faught and died for this country to keep it free. I think it is sad that either people don't vote or don't make an informed decision. Money, nice looking signs, and dirty campaigning shouldn't win elections.

How funny these comments are. Does anyone truly believe that most people pay that much attention to local races during a national election or any other time? I would be willing to bet most people knew more about the props than any local candidate. They relied on the ballot statements, smear campaign mailers and the numerous signs they saw littering our landscape. It is clear that money buys elections, unless your name is Kirk or Blewett. That was a surprising and unexpected turn of events.

Now I know why your not a Chris Bentley fan. He has many flaws, but probably the one thing I probably agree with him on his his belief that parents and the community have the right to question their elected officials actions and be heard.

Always a fan of people who claim to know what the public wants. The only thing you can factually come away from the election with is that the majority of the voters wanted Riley and Bentley on the school board. To tie that to the public liking the changes and wanting more is a big assumption. Shuting up and going home is exactly what the board majority wants. Heaven forbid people or parents question them.

For those who constantly post here that THEY spoke out about the 6th grade schools or some other change only to find the board did not listen and made the changes anyway. Please pay attention to the vote results, the three top vote getters are people that you all tied to the current board members, heck, the top vote getter was the person the teachers said they didn't want. Maybe the public is telling you all to shut up and go home, they like the changes and want to see more. Just a thought. The voters have twice allowed Swanson to remain unelected, maybe thats a sign they are done with him too.

The only picture I see is a nameless person making accusations and doing nothing about it. If you honestly believe this stuff is happening and you know where to look and know what questions to ask, then the school polices door is always open. If ou feel they won't listen then go to the city police. If you know of wrong doing and do nothing then your just as much to blame as tose who are actually doing it. Get the picture?

Even vacuum cleaners are missing, carpet cleaners, very expensive ones. Just boots of things are missing from that school. You will find things that you never will think that are missing if you just know where to look, ask the right people and they know the answers. its happening at every site. Money missing is just the fist step. they order more than they need for a reason so most goes home with the right person. Get the picture.

just look in the home of the of the sultana plant supervisor he even takes gas for the carts, he takes whatever he wants, they dont even have any money left in their budget. the school blamed there main computer missing on Hesperia High on them and it was him who left the door open and it just diapered that cost a lot of money to replace. that was a rumor I heard. Even toilet paper is missing big cases of it because of a wrong order. that maintenance shop is a health hazard if they ever look at it.

Steve must be a board member, afterall that is the MO. Blame everyone else for the way things are. Who was to blame for a questionable land deal? Who was to blame for going with a high priced construction firm with less experience? Who was to blame for wanting to hire a friend for 360K to oversee a project to which the district already had staff for? Who is to blame for closing a 6th grade school, claiming not everyone could attend and then putting in their HTA backed Choice School that not everyone can attend? Couldn't possibly be the elected adults who have made informed decisions but didn't like the outcome. Who is to blame for the 4 million spent on Cypress and 2 million on Mission Crest so Kirk and Pace could finally have their choice school? Do I need to go on? How is a lack of cooperation from "Those people", I mean parents that disagree with their decisions a lack of cooperation. If cooperating with the board would have kept the 6th grade school open I would have been more than happy too.

Cooperation? Please Steve you couldn't be more wrong. I personally spoke out at a board meeting as a parent with administrators from Hesperia Jr, Cypress, Oxford, and Ranchero against closing the 6th grade schools. Teachers from all three spoke against closing the 6th grade schools. Not one parent went in front of the board to ask that they be shutdown. Where was the cooperation then and the elected officials representing the public they serve. There is one group to blame for the way things are. Kirk, Black, Rogers. They have proven over and over by their actions they feel they don't have to cooperate with anyone. If cooperation means not questioning the board or being silent, then I guess I'm uncooperative.

| Come on. There have been excuses ranging from voters not being able to distinguish one last name from another, to some only voting for Bentley because he was listed as a Parent on the ballot. With the resounding victory it's obvious that the public is clear on who they wanted on the board. Stop trying to make excuses.
Bentley, and Riley. Good luck on your upcoming terms of office, you're already facing an uphill battle with many of the people on these boards. No matter what you decide to do, or vote on, you'll be criticized every step of the way. These people are the reasons why things are the way they are. They refuse to cooperate. It takes two to tango. |

ChrisB, I am not a fan of your actions or attitude. I also think it is important that people stop calling you an HTA candidate. Although enough of the selection commitee thought enough of you to put your name in the hat, HTA did not choose to back your candidacy. Your campaign was all your own. While I think people who voted for you did so thinking you were the OTHER ChrisL and will be surprised to find they have voted for you, I understand you really do care about the education of your children. I respectfully ask you to be the board member you said you would be and ensure your actions, words and attitude are ALL for the benefit of the kids and the education they go to school to get. I also ask that you go into your new position with an open mind and a willingness to learn and be humble. You will not always be right and you will not always get your way, remember you were elected to be a representative voice on the board NOT to be THE voice. Good Luck
