The Fitness Brother: Jump start your weight loss

Changing your eating habits, implementing regular exercise and planning relaxing activities are a great way to begin your weight loss journey with strong momentum. Using the right tools will allow you to make healthier changes but there are certain techniques that must be used to keep you from falling off the horse too often, leading to frustration and eventually giving up the new lifestyle.

No diets allowed

Don’t tell your friends and family that you’re starting a diet. Diets are meant to have a beginning and an end, whereas healthy changes are set in place with no intention of going back. Write down healthy foods that you enjoy eating such as apples, sweet potatoes, celery, spinach and cantaloupe, then go buy them. Make sure you implement a fruit or veggie into each meal to ensure you get plenty of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. This will enable you to prepare low calorie meals that will lead to weigh loss.

Get moving instead of watching

People spend multiple hours per day in front of their television which leads to a lack of movement and weight gain. Slash your TV time in half by recording your favorite shows on DVR and fast forwarding the commercials. Instead of adding more shows to your list, spend your free time jogging with the dog at the park, riding your bike with your kids or chatting on the phone with a friend while walking on the treadmill.

Get messy in the kitchen

Many people use the excuse that they don’t know how to cook because they’ve always had their meals prepared for them by their mom, spouse or their local fast food chef. If you truly want to lose weight, then you must become more comfortable in the kitchen. Only by preparing your own home cooked meals will you begin to see significant weight loss. You will save money since eating out costs twice as much as cooking your own meals and impress loved ones when you bring over an amazing dish to holiday gatherings.

Find support

A support system is the only way to stay on track with your fitness goals. The support of your children, parents, spouse and friends will mean the world when you indulge. Ice cream or a few slices of pizza could be gratifying at the moment but once you feel guilty for deviating from your healthy eating plan, you can easily fall into a downward spiral. Make sure to talk to others about how you feel after eating the comfort food and they will likely encourage you to move on.

Keep the workouts fun

The famous words spoken by Albert Einstein can be applied to the world of fitness: “The definition of insanity is the doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” A personal trainer might be a good fit since a good trainer will keep the workouts fun and fresh. Utilize a multitude of exercise styles to keep your interest such as cardio kickboxing, weight training, bootcamp group workouts, Pilates and Yoga.
