Lisa Benson's cartoon, Charles Roedell's sign

The sign held up at Hesperia Unified School District school board meetings by teacher Charles Roedell features caricatures of the three board members targeted by proponents of a recall proposition.

The caricatures are taken from a 2007 cartoon drawn by cartoonist Lisa Benson and published in the Victorville Daily Press.

Could you draw one of Hank Richardson? I want one for something to laugh at? he is the real one who needed one. He was always so mean to every employee just everyone was to afraid to say anything because they would have lost there jobs for it he would of held a grudge over it. But your pics are your point of view and you are entitled to them they cannot stop you if kirks wife can take pictures of the signers of the recall why not draw a picture of what you think? the kids draw pics of the teachers they cant stand everyday. hOW ABOUT MAKING THEM ALL PUPPETS ON A STRING THATS WHAT THEY ARE NOW?

That is laughable and a lie. Check out the PERB file. Truth trumps lies everytime.

PERB, you can't find it because the file was purged by kirk order, not a judge order.

Please select and transfer where the admin law judge made this ruling. My copy doesn't include this statement. It does make interesting reading in it's entirety though. Copies are available from some who also have copies of the recall petitions.

In the interest of full disclosure, this teacher was ordered to take the items off the walls and complied. The personnel file was purged by judicial order based on findings from a judge from the Public Employees Relation Board. It is a matter of public record. Check it out if you would like to know the truth.

I love this cartoon. It is just Lisa's commentary on the school board. Why anybody would take it personally is beyond me. If you need any tips on hanging questionable political items in your classroom, just ask Lee Samuels. Apparently, it's not a problem. He had some very derogatory things in his classroom having to do with our current president. I'd go ahead and do it. What's the worst that could happen. You'll get to retire early with a clean personnel record.

HUSD Teacher, yes, I am a teacher, and one with a sense of humor. Hence the comment about posting in my classroom. But apparently what is funny and obvious to me is neither funny nor obvious to you.

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder so they say. Guess the same thing could be said for humor. What one person finds funny may not be funny to someone else. That is freedom of choice. However political cartoons usually aren't intended to be hurtful just commentary. Calling someone a twit because you don't like them is not funny and says alot more about you than it does the person you're talking about.

To I am not laughing. Not only the blind wear sunglasses. Clearly, with the oversized glasses and Mickey Mouse ears and ballet tutu, the intent is to show Lee Rogers as a twit. I guess other twits might be offended by this. The afro on Mr. Black is shaded to represent those multicolored clown wigs. In black and white, I guess, that's not so obvious. The gigantic bowtie should've clued you in, though. Again, I guess the clown community might have a beef. At least you aren't accusing Lisa of being anti-spaceman.

Um, I think she's, uh, figured it out, don't you think? Especially since the Star reprinted it? These Star guys do their research.

Does he really have permission to use these? If Lisa is such a talented and respected political artist, why would she approve such a display of her work? Someone should contact her just to make sure she has given her permission to use her material.

are you sure? - Mar 24, 2008 08:07:26 PM Remove Comment

I guess some people find political cartoons funny. I find them cruel. Does this Lisa even know what these people look like or even what they represent? Her drawings really look like she is making fun of blind people hence the sunglasses and black people hence the afro hair style. Guess I'm missing the humor here.

This is stupid. To say that this looks like Lee Rogers is like saying that Rosie O'Donnel looks like Angelina Jolie.

I sincerely hope that Intimidated isn't a teacher. This cartoon is not appropriate to post in a classroom. We send our children to school to learn academics not politics. However if this is a real teacher then he or she should know that political items like this are prohibited from display in the classroom. Or perhaps this person isn't very well informed on the legal responsibilities, not to mention ethical ones, of a classroom teacher. Whatever political views you have should NOT enter your classroom.

Can you find a political cartoon that ISN'T offensive to someone? I love this one. Lee Rogers looks exactly like that. Can I post this in my classroom?

Good to know that you agree that Bruce and Helen aren't normal folks!

I love Lisa! She is so talented. She has a sense for what is going on and expresses it so well. You folks don't get that politicians put themselves in the position to be held up to criticism. They are not like normal folks. If they can't take it, they shouldn't be in politics.

Lisa Bensons opinion cartoon is offensive to many. Mrs. Montes has a right to her opinion . The sign Mr. Roedell holds only shows the heads of the charicatures . I can completely understand why Mrs. Montes would see something else in those drawings . I for one feel the cartoon is ridiculous . The opinion editor at the daily rag often prints over the top cartoons.

Great cartoon. Expresses perfectly what's going on, even now. There has been little change in behavior for these three, and Lisa, as she so often does, got it perfect.

So does that mean that these cartoons are copyrighted? If so, then does Charles have permission to use them in this fashion? I think it's one thing for Lisa to draw these but for Charles to use them as he does really demeans what she does.
