A View from Main Street: Park planning is opportunity to get involved

STAR EDITOR

If you like to ride a skateboard, play volleyball, horseback ride or do almost any recreational activity now is a perfect time for you to get involved in something very exciting. With a $5 million grant in its sights, the Hesperia Recreation and Park District is calling on all district users (and those who might want to join in) to share their ideas.

And so over the next week, the district will continue holding its community planning meetings at Lime Street Park.

At the first meeting, shared their desires for a skateboard park, increased leisure activities, new equestrian facilities, aquatics park and more. But the district is willing to hear it all. Heck, if you play baatchi ball or want to play cricket now is the time to make your voice heard. The district is all ears.

Here are the remaining meetings: Tuesday, November 10 at 2 p.m.; Saturday, November 14 at 10 a.m. and Tuesday, November 17 at 6:30 p.m.

Share what’s on mind. The park district is here to serve you.

Frankly, I’m not sure I understand why it can take the school board so many minutes — or sometimes hours — to accomplish so little. Last week four of the five present couldn’t even agree on the night’s agenda, so the meeting was forced to end.

Without the presence of board member Anthony Riley, who tends to vote with Robert Kirk and Hardy Black, the foursome (which also included Lee Rogers and Chris Bentley) couldn’t agree to agree.

Sometimes it seems these grownups are still fighting over a playground kick ball. Come on, now, let’s be nice boys and girls and share the ball.

I was shocked and saddened to see that former Apple Valley resident Mona “Betty” Towle died after a scuba diving accident on Santa Catalina Island. Betty was the signicant other of Darryl Evey, the new president of the Rotary Club of the Hesperia Community, which meets Tuesdays at Los Domingos Restaurant. It was clear from Darryl’s upbeat countenance over the past few months, that Betty must have been a wonderful person. He certainly spoke highly of her.

Our condolences go out to Darryl and Betty’s family and friends.

I forgot to mention in my front page story on Roll Over Beethoven’s music store that owner Willie Boyle has recovered nicely from the horrendous, head-on traffic collision that occurred more than a year ago. Most importantly, according to Willie, his step-daughter Dyllie Sumner, who was hurt the most, is also doing extremely well.

“She’s running. She looks perfect. She has a lot of energy. She’s 100 percent back,” Willie said during his interview with the Star.

On Fox 11 news this morning it showed a demo at a school down the hill with a 1/2 pipe ramp. Bikers, skaters and roller bladders all on the same ramp taking turns. Thats how it should be. This kids need to share these parks.

Nice bit of self-promotion by Mr. Furmage, whose immature antics here in Apple Valley have turned off innumerable people, many of whom would otherwise have supported his BMX park.

Part 2 Today these children are left to ride in the parking lots of businesses in the streets and store fronts causing a multitude of problems with store owners and land owners In addition it is not safe for these children to ride at these places as they often mix with vehicle traffic Several High Desert Communities have bound together and created and or are working on resolving these issues for the citizens business owners and children of their communities by building such facilities The High Desert Freestlye BMX Fund recognizes the City of Hesperia as having one of the largest groups of riders in the high desert and still has yet to provide it citizens and their children with a safe and legal place to ride For this reason we would like to humbly and respectfully ask that the lime street park be utilized for this purpose Logistically it is perfectly located at the center of the city and will be accessible to all of the citizens and children The High Desert Freestyle BMX Fund would like to extend our assistance in furthering this project We can assist in park design research contractor utilization BIDs and will back any tax free fundraising which may qualify you for items such as grants and donations We will assist you free of charge and will work with your Park and Recreations Department in any way necessary to achieve this goal Thank You William Furmage 7609274655

My name is William Furmage and my Co Founder Josh Riching and I started the High Desert Freestlye BMX Fund, a new Non-Profit organization dedicated to creating parks for youth bicycle riders and skateboarders to ride and skate in We developed this organization after recognizing the need for youth to have a place to practice their craft just as an equestrian rider a soccer player, a baseball player and the like practice theirs Unlike the previously mentioned types of sports Bicycle riders and Skateboarders are not presently provided with a safe and legal place to ride Hesperia as grown in leaps and bounds with regards to population and with it comes the youth with their interest of these modern sports In many cases families are dual income out of necessity and team sports are not an option as both parents must work and or due to the expense or scheduling. Many single parents cannot enroll their children in team sports due to the same problems This may contribute to the rise in interest of these sports by children These children must engage in some sort of inexpensive physical activity that offers a flexible schedule as a matter of good health
