Letter to the Editor - March 26, 2008

Hesperia

The Hesperia Unified School District Board shouldn't provide perks to the new superintendent in light of the state budget problems. Because of the budget crises in Sacramento , 54 teachers may be laid off by the district. At the same time, the board as decided to overcompensate Mark McKinney to the tune of $153,797.00 per year, with an additional $9,300 in health and welfare cost. As if that wasn't enough, the district will take care of Mr. McKinney's automobile expenses, at a cost of $850.00 per month. I'm guessing Mark won't be driving around in a Chevy Aveo Base Model, which retails for around $10,000.00. The school board felt that Mr. McKinney, at $153,797.00, won't be able to afford a cell phone, laptop computer or a home fax machine, so they provided (at taxpayer expense) all of those things. You would think that Mr. McKinney was a contestant on the Price is Right, or something.

Here in the real world, the parents of those children that Mr. McKinney's in charge of educating scrape by on about $34,000 per year. They have to pay for health benefits out of pocket and receive zero dollars for an automobile allowance. This is another example of how out of touch our government (Hesperia School Board) is with the folks who elect them and to whom they serve. If the school board feels they have to lay off 54 teachers, why not start at the top. Eliminate the $850.00 automobile allowance, and slash the $9,300 in health and welfare cost. Considering that Mark McKinney is getting paid 5 times what the average high desert resident is earning, I think he can afford to pay for these things himself, on $153,797.00.

Even in good economic times, providing cars, tax funded health and welfare benefits, fax machines, cell phones and laptop computers should be called into question considering the amount of compensation superintendents already receive. However, when 54 teachers may be laid off due to budget problems, all of these perks should be suspended until money is available to not lay off a single teacher. Making decisions like these places the education of our students on the lowest priority. Cutting teachers should be the last step the district takes, after all other means of reducing the budget have been implemented. On a personal note, we have 3 children enrolled in the Hesperia School District, while our 4th will be starting kindergarten in August.

For the record, I was less than serious in recommending that someone write a letter requesting Hank to give the money back. I suggested it to make a point, the point being, you can't accuse McKinney of harming the district by accepting a pay that is reasonable if your going ignor the fact that someone, Hank in this case, walked away with much more and is currently doing nothing to earn it. In either case, I don't begrudge them thier money. If we weren't being falsly alarmed by the states budget whoes compensation would never even been brought up.

Mark deserves a tremendous amount of credit for the integrity he displayed in accepting the low end of the top pay scale. He has never been a superintendent, recognizes that he has a learning curve, and accepted a comparable pay slot. I respect him for it. Although, when you actually read his new contract, his actual pay is somewhat fuzzy. I hope it gets fixed to explicitly state what both parties seemed to desire when they entered into the agreement. Fuzzy contract clauses are never a good idea. Hank too had never been a superintendent before, yet he negotiated the high end of the scale. Hank also took the cash for health insurance because his wife was covered by her district. Make your own judgments there. Although, with COLA and steps, near ten percent increases per year are rather excessive, in my opinion. As far as researching other districts, the CA Public Records Act exists for ordinary people, and not just reporters, to access this type of information. ml has a good idea in gathering the superintendent pay/perk info into a comprehensive file, although I believe that district place too much value on ensuring that surrounding pay is comparable. There are intangibles to consider when seeking, or seeking to change, employment, that have value too. I think Mark is the right person to help HUSD turn the page on past leadership problems. I obviously disagree with those who liked HR and DB and their brand of management. I respect Mark and firmly believe that his pay and perks are earned.

Why doesn't someone at the Hesperia Star do an article on what the other superintendents in the surrounding school districts receive for their wages and perks. And then be sure to compare district size, infact break it down to price paid per student. I want the facts, not the bickering of the recall people verses board supporters. Also, was Mr. Gerling this concerned when the other superintendents received a similar package deal? Please Hesperia Star, give the facts.

I meant to say that LBO and I agree on Mark's compensation and the tenure thing.

Mr Gerling, you are wrong. There is nothing wrong with the compensation package. Mark deserves his pay and other compensation. Hank deserved his, and Bray deserved his. I as a teacher deserve what I get, which is only about 1/3 of Mark’s but I don’t want his job. Can you imagine sucking up to Robert Kirk for the rest of your life just to save your job? The sad thing is that HTA leadership, aka Jim Pace, beat up on the board that hired Mr. Bray using these same compensation arguments. Now HTA, aka Pace, supports this board for giving even more compensation than Bray got. How about an article about that in the next HTA newsletter Jimmy Boy? I’d like to see how you spin that one. As far as the inequity issue, if you have the ability to make $150k or more, then do it. If you can only make $34k per year then maybe you don't have what it takes to be the superintendent of the largest district in the high desert. Get over your socialistic view of life Gerling and get with the real world. I think this salary issue is one where I mostly agree with LBO, unusually, though rather than asking Hank to give the money back, maybe we should ask the board to just let Hank finish his job. There were two parties involved in his euphemistically labeled "retirement" remember.

I am glad to see that so far no one is in agreement with Mr. Gerling. I agree with JD. As far as Hank's situation is concerned, LBO, he did nothing dishonorable. Everybody knows he retired at the urging of the new board. They could have kept him and he would have continued to do the job he was being paid for. Put the blame where it belongs, on the school board.

Mr. Gerling, most residents in this area do not have a college degree, much less a master's degree, or are responsible for 22,000 students, 1000's of employees and serve a community as large as Hesperia. His salary is far less than CEO's of companies with a fraction of the employee base. HUSD is the desert's largest employer. Bashing the meager salary of HUSD's CEO is laughable.

To have a man of Mark's integrity, character, and leadership ability be at the helm during this recall nonsense and the state budget crisis is worth every penny we pay him and more in my opinion. Mark is working very hard to implement cost savings to prevent layoffs and to keep these cuts away from our kids' classrooms. We are fortunate to have him as our superintendent.

A laborer is worthy of his hire. In addition, Mr. Richardson was more than worthy as well. A shame he was 3 to 2'd out of his job. LBO should lay blame where it's due for that, but I further will say Mr. McKinney did not demand his due when he negociated his contract.

Given the public beating McKinney gets for being the guy who steped into the ring in the middle of the recall fight, i think he deserves to be well compensated. I would rather the district save money by elimanting some of the ineffective teachers that tenure grants a free pass to. To bash McKinney for aspiring to be successful is a horrible thing to do and smacks of socialism. Shame on you Thomas for implying that McKinneys compensation is the reason for possible layoffs. If you want to go that route, you should write a letter to the editor asking Hank Richardson to do the honorable thing and give HUSD the money he is recieving for not working after his voluntary resignation. At least McKinney is doing the work while being well compensated.

Mr. Gerling, just to satisfy my own curiosity here, do you have any clue as to what the job of superintendent in a district of over 20,000 students entails, or to what tools might be necessary to help do that job effectively?
