Letter to the Editor - March 19, 2008
I recently attended the February 25th HUSD school board meeting and I was completely surprised and disgusted to see the posters that were on display by Charles Roedell. I understand that he is a teacher at Lime Street School in Hesperia. I am offended by his posters, especially the character of Hardy Black because it looks like he’s supposed to be an African-American, which Mr. Black is not.
I think these posters show horrible judgment and are racist, to say the least. How am I supposed to explain these posters to my children? I’m glad that Mr. Mark McKinney had the gumption to say that he wanted the posters to be taken down and that they were offensive.
Isn’t Charles Roedell employed by HUSD? What a shameful, disrespectful way to act to the HUSD board members and public. I expect better behavior and judgment of our Hesperia teachers, although I’m guessing and hoping that he doesn’t have any followers.
I will be attending the next board meeting, and I hope that Mr. Roedell will have better judgment and keep his posters in the trash.

No Intimidated, it is you who missed the point. How can Ms. Montez talk with you if you are too scared to give your name?

geez, once again you miss an obvious point. The problem is I disagree with Montes and I have the right to speak out about it. She can talk all she wants, even if she's wrong. The real problem is that anyone who speaks out against this board or anyone who supports them is labeled as hateful and divisive.

So why are you sharing your opinion here rather than taking it up directly with Mr. Roedell? Airing out your beef in public only continues to make our district look bad. If you have a problem with Charles, talk to Charles. If you have a problem with the board, talk to the board. If you have a problem with Mr. McKinney, talk to him. This constant use of the Letters to the Editor forum to hang our dirty laundry is a shame. So, Mrs. Montes, if you'll make yourself known at the April board meeting, I'd be glad to speak with you directly.

I just heard a frightening rumor. Chris Bentley is running for school board in November. Say It Isn't So! I certainly hope the teachers union has a brain enough NOT to support him.

It is time the teachers get over the petty stuff. They have children to teach. Remember the Union endorsed Bruce and Helen. I wonder how much time is given to the recall, etc. rather than the time in the classroom.

The cartoon of Hardy Black is NOT RACIST. The cartoon is suppose to represent a CREEPY CLOWN. This was in a previous editorial. Charles has the right to lodge his protest against this board. Just because he is employed by HUSD doesn't take that right away. If our Founding Fathers thought that way, we'd still be subjects of Great Britain. It's time this Board got over themselves and started working towards their supposed goals. . . Helping Our Children.

Is anyone really going to argue that some professions, like teaching, force the person to always be viewed as such? A politician, board member, policeman, teacher etc are always viewed as being thier profession. How many times have you heard on the news that a teacher was arrested for some sort of crime. Certainly they were not asked to commit the crime by the district yet the news alls them a teacher. Mr Roedel is always viewed as being a teacher and his actions in and out of the classroom reflecton ALL teachers. His duty is to exercise his free speech responsibly, in doing so he would be a credit to the profession regardless of his point of view. I for one don't think the poster is racist or offensive, it is pretty clever. The actions of the person holding it however, are out of line given the rules of order.

Yeah from the sound of it Teacher and Intimidated and others posting here are really open to free speech. That is for everyone but Maria Montez. Talk about irony.

I think you're confusing irony with anger. Intimidated obviously is being ironic, which, ironically, makes those opposed to free speech regardless of what profession you've chosen, angry.

Whoa Intimidated. You're way too angry here. You need to get some help so you can calm down. Please get help before you hurt yourself or others. I hope you're not a teacher. Kids should not be around someone this angry. Get help, please.

Yeah, who am i?, what are those teachers thinking? That they actually have the same rights as non-teachers? That they can publicize political cartoons that were actually published in a free press newspaper? Yikes. Don't they know that elected officials deserve to operate without public ridicule? Don't they know that they should let Jim Pace be their sole advocate and hold past boards accountable for their actions? What are they thinking actually questioning the actions of the current board, their employer, the ones who can have them fired? They should just stay in the classroom and shut their mouths. Their students may actually see them exercising civic rights and get ideas about maybe doing the same thing some day. Bad teachers.

Mr roedell is a teacher, the nature of the job requires that his actions always be viewed thru the lens of him being a teacher. If he committed a crime in public, the paper would describe him as a local teacher. Like it or not, some professions put a label on you that can not be taken off in public.

get real, you're right. What was I thinking. This is America after all, I should stop speaking out about what I perceive as hateful and divisive behavior by our new board members and by HTA. After all, mr kirk mr black and mrs rogers are my bosses and I could get fired or something. I should just be quiet and drink the Kool Aid. I feel so much better now. Can I come to the next barbecue at Bentley's house?

Intimidated you don't sound like you are. Anyway your latest post shows just how much you DON'T KNOW any of the three board members OR Jim Pace. Why don't you try to work for the betterment of the district instead of spreading hate and division. We are in tough times with the budget cuts and we should all be pulling together to work this out.

Watch out white men, you are not allowed to protest anything without being labeled a racist. Please confine your speech to African Americans, Latino/a Americans, or non-Americans.

| get real, then by your logic, all we have to do is wait this thing out for a couple of years. It will be old news and not worth it anyway. Ok. Sounds like a plan.
Also, if you are a member of HTA then you know as well as I do that Pace's attacks on board members and superintendents have been more regular than the board meetings. Of course now that he has three board members in his pocket, we all of a sudden have a cooperative board that listens. What a complete joke. |

So somehow we should think less of Mr Roedell because his child has a transfer? Please, he is well within his right to have his child go to HUSD, as himself or wife are employees. So do we think less of Mr Olney, Sergio Lugo and the MANY other faculty that have their children attend HUSD. It should actually be looked at as a compliment that our staff in the district chose to have their children attend HUSD instead of other districts.
