Letter to the Editor - March 6, 2008
Newspapers deal in the currency of credibility and, once again, Peter Day has lowered the value of the Hesperia Star's currency with his factually incorrect and skewed view from Main Street pro-recall advertorial last week. Peter does write on the opinion page, just like his Daily Press counterpart Steve Williams, but both men are still obligated to support their opinion with truthful facts. This issue is frustrating for a long-time Star reader who simply seeks solid local reporting done without fear or favor which is presented through good writing.
Last week, Peter wrote that the pro-recall crowd had started 'collecting signatures to get the measure on the June ballot,' although the online version has been quietly edited to erase, not correct the error.
That statement is absolutely false for the pro-recall spokesperson has specifically and publicly stated, to the Star/DP, that they seek to force this issue into a very expensive special election, paid for by HUSD taxpayers.
Peter also wrote, in the very next paragraph, 'Many of those who want the recall proposal to go before a vote of the people are worried that photos ... could be used against them.' Once again, Peter Day has chosen to take liberties with the truth and demonstrate his bias in favor of the recall.
The Star quotes only one person as the recall spokesperson in their writings, no one else. I can count, using my two hands and having plenty of fingers left over, the number of letters to the editor printed by the Star that have had pro-recall authors. This number does not even come close to the 'many,' Mr. Day states exist in his advertorial. Mr. Day's statement is unsubstantiated editorial bias because the Star/Peter Day have not spoken to 'many' pro-recallers who support this position; or if they have, they certainly have failed to support the conversations, as many journalists do, by sharing verifiable quotes from the 'many' with their readership.
How many of the 2200 or so HUSD employees would constitute 'many?' How many live here and/or have their children educated through HUSD? How many actually support the recall? Legitimate questions all, but have they even been asked let alone answered?
The false 'intimidation' issue is a recent addition to the pro-recall group's weak arsenal, which is now starting to seek, and loudly vocalize, any and all perceived excuses for their failures. And the mathematical realities of the recall efforts show that they will fail. And I will even spot the pro-recall folks 2200 signatures; they still fall short.
The recall group will not honestly admit that they were too inexperienced, and rather inept, in garnering grass-root support. They waited far too long before even starting to collect signatures, which is an actual requirement for any further action. They did not have the community support they alleged. And it should be noted that the three elected board members being subjected to recall, and their many positive efforts for HUSD, are actually appreciated by folks in the community.
Just saying you are a grass-roots organization with ample community support does not make you one. Just getting louder with your messages, as the long-known signature deadline approaches, does not make you any closer to actually achieving success. Just getting louder does not make your arguments right or even just. Just getting them printed does not make them have value, particularly when the printer happens to agree with your rhetoric. Just subjecting people to the recall, and your negative bashings, because they legitimately beat you in proper elections, does not devalue their many positive efforts at change and betterment for HUSD.
An experienced newspaperman once said that a 'newspaper's product is neither news nor information. We are in the influence business.' Peter Day and his pro-recall friends have certainly taken that influence standard to heart with his pro-recall advertorials and their repeated false arguments and innuendo regarding their perceived failures rather than partaking in actual reflection and analysis regarding both their election-loss guided motives and their actual failures of leadership and execution in their recall efforts.
But fortunately, for those who wish to simply move on and support HUSD in its meaningful efforts, April 7th is right around the corner and that is the date of death for this recall effort. I wonder if the Star will then write its obituary or just wait and write the birth announcement of its next incarnation.

| When Hardy Black and Lee Rogers interviewed with CSEA prior to their election, the question was asked if elected, would there be a change in Superintendent? Lee danced around the question, stating that she hoped Hank would change. Black stated outright that Hank would have to go. I believe Hank acted in the best interest of the district and exited without a scene. It was quiet, had dignity and showed the class of Mr. Richardson. To bad the gang of three didn't take any notes, maybe then they wouldn't be making such fools of themselves. |

| Sounds like you're getting nervous mr. kirk. If there are so few people supporting the recall then you don't need Bentley to be your pen name. |

| Hank must be a liar then because his statement reads that he voluntarily retired. His contract was so secure that it would have required 4 votes not 3 to "fire" him. |

| To voter. what makes you think I belong to the union? Some of us are required to pay a fair share but are not members of the union. Or were you not aware of that? To geez. Actually I called them the "gang of three". Guess this comprehension thing swings both ways, huh. As for fired employees, I can name one - Hank Richardson. If you think he just "volunteered" for the good of the district, then you just don't understand the politics of the board. And yes, I have listened to the board. Thats what scares me. |

| Scared employee should read for comprehension here. Mr. Bentley stated that there will not be an election in June. He did not state that there were no petitions out there or that if the required number of signatures are obtained that there will be an election. He just stated the fact that there would not be a June election. I'd like to know how many classified employees have been fired by "the three" as you refer to them. The truth is that the number is ZERO. You either have not talked to these board members or you just didn't listen to them. |

| Mr Bentley. I'm not going to bother with most of your diatribe. Just a couple of points. First, how is “collecting signatures to get the measure on the June ballot", in your words, "absolutely false"? The petitions are out in the community. I know people who have them. I believe I have even seen a photo or two of the petition gatherers. Vickie Kirk has even admited to photographing gathers altho she denies photographing people signing the petions. Surely you have also seen the gatherers. So Peters statement seems to me to be true.
Second, you asked how many of the Hesperia employees "actually support the recall?". Well I can't speak for the teachers. But judging from the comments here and on other letters, the list seems to more thna a handfull and growing.
But I can speak for the classified employees. I'm not going to claim to have talked to all of the classifieds. But I have talked to enough to believe that my sample is statistically significant. And I can report that more than half support to recall. We are all afraid of loosing our jobs. We are all afraid of the "gang of three".
And this just isn't the way a school district should be run. Contrary to the HTA's believe, the overwelming majority of classified employees are good honest people who simple want an honest days pay for an honest days work. And a little recognition that what we do matters.
The "gang of three" don't believe that. And apparently you don't either.
"Just getting louder does not make your arguments right or even just." It simply makes them louder. |

| So why is it that Bentley wants Peter Day to list those names of people he has spoken to with direct quotes? Yet he writes "are actually appreciated by folks in the community. " Has Bentley spoken to all the "folks" in the community? Why doesn't Bently list the folks he has spoken to that support the board with names? Being part of this community, I do support the recall and I have never spoken to Bentley. So accordingy to Bentleys own standard he shouldn't write what he did. I do however appreciate Peter Day printing Bentleys ramblings even if they may be co authored by someone else. |

| Bentley is back from his whirlwind tour of NOT GETTING A JOB. Like most, once I see his byline, I have no need of reading the letter. Same clap trap as always. His hatred of Bill Freeman actually comes from Freeman doing his job of keeping Bentley of the necks of those who actually have/do a job. I long for those Halcyon days. |
