Letter to the Editor - July 24, 2007
Dear Editor,
How do I explain? I'm leaving, after ten great years with the Hesperia Unified School District. I leave having great relationships with students, parents, friends and colleagues during my time here as a teacher and administrator. Even with most of my extended family and close friends close by, I'm still leaving.
Please excuse the drama of this public commentary of what should be a personal concern. There has been some speculation concerning my actions and even attempts by a few to use my departure for personal and/or political objectives. I'd like to set the record straight.
The current governance of this district does play a part in my departure because it is out of balance and there seems to be little inclination on the part of our citizens to be aware or involved with what is happening right now in our local schools. Hesperia is one of several union run, dare I say, bought and paid for school districts in the state of California. Every member of the board was a teacher or is married to a teacher and while the interests of teachers should be represented on a school board, no school board should represent the exclusive interests of any group. No matter how hard they try, I don't believe the current board members can represent the community's interests in our schools. And I believe they are trying, but I also believe they are putting this school district in jeopardy economically, academically, and in leadership, in terms of who is attracted to the district or who stays as administrators.
Why should there be concern? The recently elected school board members seem to be acting on a predetermined and probably dictated agenda or hit list. Though this is constantly denied, amazingly, one-by-one, action is taken on the rumored items of their agenda, which don't at all seem to be election issues on which they ran. Proposing a new calendar, eliminating all previously consulted legal firms with numerous areas of expertise in favor of a single law firm with limited experience in education, the end of the Public Information Officer position, trying to intervene in and create their own role in the hiring process of district management, proposing the creation of "Choice Schools" at elementary while eliminating the sixth grade academies, forcing the creation of a new "site based management" that essentially straps down any administration decision making or activity with additional powers being granted to a site's teachers over their principals, and intervening in the bidding and contractual award process are just some of the obvious actions taken by the board in forwarding their goals.
The recently elected board members have demonstrated repeatedly that they are willing to ignore any and all input from those hired to perform the many tasks involved in running a school district. In my opinion, this happened when a new calendar was proposed at the very first board meeting after the election, before any committees or even basic protocols like having the issue on a board agenda were met. Then there was the elimination of the position of the Public Information Officer, which may seem trivial to some, but this position was eliminated after extreme public ridicule by board members and the questioning of the very integrity of district personnel for creating the position and for the salary associated with it. I find it interesting that no media was in attendance at a most recent and critical board meeting awarding the high school construction contract to a firm not recommended by any district staff and creating the redundant position of a Construction Manager. The creation of the Construction Manager's position flies in the face of some of the earlier logic used to remove the Public Information officer because paying this person for the demanded position and granted by this board is excessive. They are paying this person more than any principal makes in a given year. If the district needs more help supervising our construction projects, they could just hire three people for what they want to pay this one individual. Why don't they hire the three and watch all of our construction projects, not just the high school?
Fear and suspicion seem to be the current governing tactics used by the school board. There seems to be more time being spent behind closed doors in the school district than ever before. People at the district office and the school sites have been forced to spend an inordinate amount of time worrying about offending board members, trying to fulfill arbitrary and time consuming demands only to have their work tossed aside by the board, and trying to find time to do the job for kids they were hired to do. We have a new leadership model I cannot endorse because it tears down trust between management, school staffs and the school board. The newly introduced system of "site based management" will force school site personnel to spend more time away from students, create ultimately meaningless yet potentially punitive paperwork, and confuse everyone about their roles and where to direct their attention. Site administrators and superintendents are among the most accountable people in the education system. We are the only individuals who, under current federal law, will lose our jobs for an underperforming school or district. That is one reason we push our staffs, but I have yet to meet a principal or superintendent who is ultimately motivated by anything but the success of all kids.
There is war upon all administrators in Hesperia today. As of the writing of this letter, 13 administrators have chosen to leave our district this year. That is an alarming number, perhaps more have left than in the last five years combined. Their work has been halted through constant questioning, manipulation, and dismissal by the current board and an overly empowered teacher's union. Many teachers considered themselves oppressed over the past decade. In reality, we all lose during these struggles because ultimately, the children lose. I don't know how Hesperia will answer their current challenges, but I do know no answers will be found in the faultfinding and power trips.
The bottom line for me; in light of the current circumstances of our school district, seeing no means of affecting any positive contribution, and seeing a bleak future for what has been a most excellent school district, recognized for its achievements at the state and federal level, I have chosen to vote with my feet. I am leaving out of a sense of duty to my family and a personal integrity that will not allow me to be a part of something I do not condone. Things can change for Hesperia, but only as individuals from all walks of life will get involved. I leave with hope and best wishes for this community. I care deeply for many here. I hope needed attention will be given by all here to your schools and that you will not simply suppose that your interests are being represented.

| During the 3 years that my daughter attended Kingston Elementary, David Long always struck me as a flaccid, ineffective administrator and left me with a negative impression. I now concede that I was mistaken, and I applaud him for his statements and his convictions. I wish him the best of luck in his new position. |

| I just finished a two-year term as a teacher representative on a School Site Leadership Team SSLT. A SSLT is an organization made up of administrators, teachers, parents, and students.
1. The SSLT oversees how a school spends its limited general funds.
2. The hiring process of all staff including classified, certificated, and administrative positions.
3. The schools policies and procedures.
4. The Curricular concerns.
As a teacher in a very high achieving high school I can honestly say that the SSLTs work. By addressing the concerns of all of the stakeholders the SSLT is able to approach new ways of doing things by using the concept of buy in. Allowing all stakeholders to state their concerns and come together to find a solution.
In my district, the SSLT scope of responsibilities is defined as part of the teacher contract.
I do understand why an administrator would feel threaten by the suggestion of establishing a SSLT, but I can tell you that they work and help the community have buy in to the school and make it easier to start new programs as a result.
The concept of school site leadership is not scary and should be considered for all of the schools in Hesperia. |

| Dave Long isn't running to Utah to cover up or hide anything. He has DONE NO WRONG! If you read his letter you would see that he is going because he cannot continue to serve the children of this district with all that the new board has been doing. They are making everyones job's a hundred times harder and taking them away from the schools for long periods of time, when they should be back at their sites helping the children. He simply is going to get away from the board and their bad decisions. He isn't teh only one leaving. Many of the best are leaving now before they ruin the entire district. They can't knowingly serve under these people. |

| Chris B., one would have to assume that Mr. Long is more privy to the reasons his 13 colleagues chose to leave than you are. |

| Part 4. And so HUSD now finds itself in a power struggle and leadership vacuum. Who shall govern and whose interests shall be served are some basic questions before the district. Who shall stay and plod on with the work that must be done and who shall flee? Leaders lead, they do not run. They lead with the resources before them. Are there rising stars in the district capable of stepping up and filling whatever voids exist? For the HUSD children who cannot vote with their feet as over-paid administrators can, I hope that the answers to these questions are found soon. |

| Part 3. I hope that Long’s count of 13 administrative casualties included Bill Freeman, although he is actually still an assistant HUSD superintendent, whom the old board, not the newly elected members, voted in closed session to provide over a quarter of a million dollars to over the course of about 15 months so he could sit at home. I hope that the group of 13 and the old governing board member’s work Long referenced was more professional in scope than the work which created the tremendous fiasco that the Hesperia Institute for ExCel now finds itself in. This ExCel mess was brought about by gross mismanagement of old board members and administrators, the newly elected board members had nothing to do with it, and were, in fact, denied their rightful seats on its board. This denial highlights the lengths that the entrenched bureaucracy of HUSD administration will go to hold onto its power. |

| Part Two. Long was wrong to imply that the 13 administrators who also chose to leave HUSD this year did so because their work was halted by the current board and an overly empowered teachers union. Perhaps they left for even more money than HUSD could provide them. Perhaps the greener pastures of northern Utah or the concrete of Orange County appealed more than the desert landscape. Perhaps they did not support HUSDs newest superintendent, who really does actually have more control over the operation of the district than any one of five elected governing board members. On top of the fact that 13 leaving this year is an absolutely false and misleading assertion, the attempt to provide reasons for other’s departures is also false ballyhoo. Why did they not also ring the bell of ominous warning as they too ran off for better things? But ringing and running aint about truths. |

| In four parts. Part One. What David Long has done with his public commentary is usually called ring and run. Dissatisfied military and political leaders do it as they retire and then publicly criticize the policies and actions that they were very recently leading and taking part in. The question on whether ring and run is an honorable ploy is usually answered with one’s already formed perspective on the issues being raised. Just like the proposed recall, some will say yes and some will say no. But issues like these usually form a paradox.
He is leaving as a Hesperia Unified School District principal to become principal of Bridger School for the Logan City School District. It is an absolute seamless transition for him. He goes from being a highly paid administrator at one school district to being a highly paid administrator at another. But the thesis he nails to this community’s door just prior to his well-planned departure is fraught with inaccuracies and innuendo. |

| Congratulations to David Long for telling it like it is. The teachers of Hesperia and not the Hesperia Union officers stand behind every word you said. |

| Kirk moved here for the sole purpose of getting elected with Union money. He doesn't care what's good for Hesperia kids, he cares what is good for him and his son who knows the WLC construction company and probably recommended their hiring. I read the info on hesperia education first dot com and it sickened me. RESIGN. |

| Hardy Black, if you don't care about being on the board which was quoted from you in another news article, then just resign. If you don't care, and the community wants you out, then go. Of course we know that won't happen because you will have pressure to stay so the three of you aren't broken up and lose the 3-2 vote power. Please for the sake of the kids of Hesperia, just quit. You can't stay awake in the board meetings so maybe it is time to just retire. |

| Oh, Mr. Long, thank you, thank you, thank you! You have said for hundreds what they know and cannot say for fear of being retaliated against. The extended loud applause that I heard you received at the board meeting on July 24th was heard and echoed by all those who have been waiting for someone to stand up to these people and speak the truth. You're right, the most honorable thing to do is for these three board members to resign with dignity. |
