The Munyan marathoners

Sultana star Hannah Munyan leads the way as all run Surf City Marathon races

Star Editor

Hannah Munyan regularly runs into the spotlight.

As a 10th-grader at Sultana High School she has been a star on the school’s cross country team since arriving last year. As a freshman, was the third Sultana girls runner to finish at the State Cross Country Championships with a 5K time of 18 minutes and 40 seconds. Last fall, she won the Mojave River League Meet.

But on Superbowl Sunday Hannah and the entire family ran different races at the Surf City Marathon in Huntington Beach.

Like usual, Hannah was the star of the day, taking first out of 104 runners 17 and under in the half marathon with a time of 1 hour, 33 minutes and 45 seconds.

Meanwhile, younger sister Moriah, a seventh-grader at Vanguard School in Apple Valley finished second out of 53 girls 12 and under in the 5K with a time of 21:55.

Younger brother John ran a 23:37 for seventh out of 77 boys 12 and under in the 5K.

But the Munyan youngsters weren’t the only ones to lace up for a grueling race. So did parents Jennifer and Russ Munyan. And each ran blistering paces for their races.

Mother Jennifer finished 30th out of 159 women ages 35-39 with a time of 3:51.02 in a full marathon (26.2 miles). Father Russ Munyan, a former coordinator for the Hesperia Unified School District, finished 58th out of 693 men 35 to 39 in the half marathon.

Congratulations to Russ and his family. I firmly believe that Russ was a great asset to HUSD. Good luck and keep running.
