Proctor defeats Tangrago

Khadaphi Proctor, regarded as one of the most talented young boxers to come out of Hesperia, won an important four-round fight against Carlos Tangrago on June 28 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

Tangrago, who came into the fight with a 2-0 record, was one of Manny Pacquiao's sparring partners. Pacquiao later won his 12-round WBC World Lightweight Title fight against David Diaz with a 9th-round knockout. Proctor is now 2-2-1.

"This is starting to open some doors," said Proctor's coach, Al Piccione.

Proctor, 23, who previously lost a tough bought against Mike Faragon, a seasoned pro with more than 85 wins, was determined to win this one.

"I didn't want to lose any rounds," he said.

Boxing announces calling the fight on truveo.com were impressed with Proctor's style and toughness.

"Proctor's more stylish in his approach," the announcer said. "Proctor's coming out with a little fire in the belly."

As Proctor's record improves, so do his opportunities. While at the Mandalay, he met sports personality Jim Lampley and "Let's get ready to rumble" announcer Mike Buffer.

Helping Proctor get ready for the big fight were sparring partners Jacob Alvarez, Martin Alvarez, Damian Brown, Trarel Burley, Chris Campos and Sammy Ramirez, who Piccione said is a real up-and-comer.

Proctor especially credits his foster parents Steve and Deanna Lee for their support.

"I call them Mom and Dad."

Piccione believes the fight against Tangrago could be a turning point in Proctor's professional boxing career.

"We upset the apple cart," Piccione said. "The guy [Tangrago] was a great fighter. Khadaphi's made fantastic progress. But he's still a work in progress."
